Hulu, Disney+ and the word they now share — New Zealand edition

Can You Watch Hulu in New Zealand?

Short answer: two things carry the Hulu name in New Zealand and only one of them is American. The local one is a hub inside Disney+, renamed from Star on 8 October 2025, licensed for New Zealand. Hulu’s own help pages say a subscription “is intended for use by members of a single U.S. household,” that “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.,” and that Hulu “doesn’t work with anonymizers or proxy services.”

New Zealand is a small market with a big expatriate population, which is why most of the traffic here is about an account that already exists rather than one somebody wants to open.

From Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton or Dunedin, hulu.com does not load Hulu at all: every hulu.com address hands you to Disney+, and the Hulu app answers with its own location error — P-EDU101, “You appear to be using an anonymous proxy tool.” A residential U.S. IP presents the U.S. location Hulu’s rules are written for — for a U.S. subscriber travelling in New Zealand, or anyone whose U.S. plan already includes what they want to watch.

That is the whole of what it does. No Hulu subscription is included, no U.S. card is issued, no account is opened, no billing country changes and no Live TV home network is set. Hulu’s rules still apply in full: it says it “cannot support the use of VPNs or proxies,” and it can block-list any address it decides is one.

One name, two products

What you can buy in New Zealand, and what you cannot

Everything on this page rests on one distinction. U.S. Hulu is the American subscription — hulu.com, the Hulu app, Hulu + Live TV — and Hulu’s own help centre is unambiguous about where it is sold: a subscription “is intended for use by members of a single U.S. household,” you “will need a U.S.-issued form of payment when you sign up,” and “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.” The first sign-up requirement is “To be located within the U.S.”

Hulu inside Disney+ in New Zealand is something else. Disney+ launched in New Zealand on 19 November 2019. Star arrived as a hub inside Disney+ in New Zealand in February 2021; on 8 October 2025 Disney renamed that hub Hulu. Disney calls Hulu its “global General Entertainment brand on Disney+”; the hub carries the general-entertainment titles Disney licenses for New Zealand — some of them Hulu originals — under a Disney+ subscription. It is not the U.S. Hulu library, it has no Hulu app of its own in New Zealand, and it has no Hulu + Live TV.

From New Zealand, expect two behaviours and no Hulu page. The website redirects to Disney+ on every address; the app returns the anonymous-proxy error, P-EDU101. Location is decided from more than the IP — browser permission, GPS, cached cookies, app-store country, the ZIP on the account, and for Live TV the home network — which is why a single change rarely settles it and why the test below goes one layer at a time.

Hulu has no travel mode. HBO Max lets a U.S. account travel to the countries where it is sold; Hulu’s help centre lists “You are accessing Hulu from outside the United States” as the first cause of its proxy error.

Why most U.S. endpoints fail here

What Hulu is actually checking when you connect from New Zealand

Hulu names the thing it looks for: “a VPN or VPS,” and addresses “block listed because of previous anonymous proxy use.” That is a statement about address type, not about country. Your own line in New Zealand — Spark, One NZ, 2degrees and Contact — reads New Zealand to Hulu whatever else you do.

Two situations in New Zealand, two different answers

This helps

A U.S. account with a location problem

You are a U.S. subscriber who moved, travelled or is working abroad, and the subscription is still being paid. The connection is the missing piece and the only one.

This does not help

An account or payment problem

You are hoping to buy Hulu in New Zealand. There is nothing to buy: Hulu sells in one country and this page cannot change that.

This is a separate question

The Hulu hub inside Disney+

If what you want is on the Hulu hub inside Disney+ in New Zealand, you already have it with a Disney+ subscription in New Zealand — and a U.S. IP is not involved at all.

One test that produces a readable answer

The four-step check, from New Zealand

Every step below removes one variable. There is no trick underneath it; that is the whole method.

1

Confirm what your account is entitled to

Before touching the network: which plan (Hulu With Ads, Hulu Premium, a Disney+ bundle, or Hulu + Live TV), how it is billed (Hulu direct, Disney-billed, or an app store) and — for Live TV — whether the home network is set. Hulu requires “a U.S.-issued form of payment.” A residential IP cannot fix an entitlement you don’t have.

2

Use a clean browser session

A private window, on a computer, with no old Hulu cookies — and none from Disney+ in New Zealand or a local streaming app either, which carry a non-U.S. location. One Hulu-specific caveat: Hulu’s help page lists private/incognito mode among the things its system can mistake for an anonymous proxy — if a private window answers P-EDU101, repeat once in a normal window after clearing hulu.com cookies and revoking Hulu’s browser location permission.

3

Bring the connection up first, then Hulu

The order is the whole trick. Connect, check on a third-party site that your public address reads United States, and only then load anything belonging to Hulu. Hulu can re-check after sign-in, so the address has to hold for the whole session — and if your ISP in New Zealand hands out IPv6, disable it for the test so nothing leaks around the route.

4

Test with something boring first

Pick an ordinary on-demand episode your plan definitely covers and let it run for a minute. That single result validates the connection, the browser and the account path together. Save the Disney+ tile, Live TV and the television app for afterwards — each of those can fail for reasons that have nothing to do with your address.

Finish with one interpretable outcome rather than a vague sense that something is broken. That is worth ten minutes.

Six places to fail, in the order they fail

Diagnosing a Hulu failure from New Zealand

The order matters more than the individual checks: doing them out of sequence produces results that contradict each other.

01

Public country

Does the public IP read United States before Hulu loads? A home line in New Zealand reads New Zealand until the U.S. route is up — and if the ISP hands out IPv6, one request outside the route is enough. If not, nothing below matters.

02

What the browser is telling Hulu

Hulu reads more than the address: the browser’s location permission, a phone’s GPS, a proxy set on the Wi-Fi, a configuration profile on iOS. Start in a private window; if that returns P-EDU101, try a normal one with hulu.com cookies cleared, because Hulu lists private mode among the things its own check can misread.

03

Entitlement

Plan, billing route, bundle activation, the “U.S.-issued form of payment,” the ZIP code. A valid login with the wrong billing route has no entitlement.

04

Separate ‘nothing works’ from ‘this one thing doesn’t’

Play an ordinary title from your own plan for a minute. If that works, everything above this line is fine, and whatever is still failing is a rights or plan question — which no connection change will move.

05

App, store and TV last

App version, app-store country, cached app data, saved region. The Hulu app is not offered to a New Zealand Apple Account or Google Play account; reinstalling without checking store country reproduces the same result. Store state and router location survive a network change, so prove the account in a computer browser first.

06

The Live TV layer is its own problem

A home network set on a fixed connection, changeable at most four times a year, plus a mobile check-in every 30 days. “Not at home” errors and missing local channels belong to this layer and to nothing else on the list.

The two-line diagnosis. Plain title plays, requested thing doesn’t → account or rights. Nothing plays → network, browser or account, in that order. Hulu’s own pages for the last step: the anonymous proxy error and the Live TV home network.

The Disney+ question, separated out

What the Hulu tile actually holds in New Zealand

The October 2025 rename put the same word on two different shelves. Knowing which shelf you are looking at answers most of the questions people arrive with.

What the U.S. tile actually is

An entitlement, not a feature

It is the U.S. Hulu library shown inside Disney+, and it depends entirely on the plan behind it: Hulu says it is for plans “billed directly by Hulu.” A Disney+ subscription on its own never unlocks it, wherever the account is. Disney has said the merged app arrives “by the end of the calendar year” and the Hulu app stays.

Disney+ in New Zealand: the Hulu hub

The former Star hub, renamed

Disney+ launched in New Zealand on 19 November 2019. Star arrived as a hub inside Disney+ in New Zealand in February 2021; on 8 October 2025 Disney renamed that hub Hulu. Disney’s release calls Hulu “the global General Entertainment brand on Disney+”; the hub holds the general-entertainment titles Disney licenses for New Zealand — the same catalogue the Star hub held the day before. Some Hulu originals are in it, under the rights Disney holds for New Zealand; the U.S. Hulu library as a whole is not, because Hulu’s rights are U.S.-only whichever app serves them.

The part a connection can and cannot reach

Address yes, entitlement no

Changing the address changes one input to one check. It does not attach the U.S. Hulu library to a Disney+ account in New Zealand, and it does not re-register a Disney+ subscription in New Zealand as an American one — Disney decides that from the account, not from the network.

The practical rule. Prove the Hulu app or hulu.com in a private desktop browser first. Then, if your U.S. plan is billed by Hulu, sign in to Disney+ with the same MyDisney email and open the Hulu tile — a second door to the same U.S.-only library, under the same location check.

Prove it once, then move the connection

Device by device, from New Zealand

Devices differ in what they hide, not in what Hulu checks. The order below is cheapest-to-diagnose first, which from New Zealand means a desktop browser and nothing else until it works.

The OpenVPN setup remains supported: download the current connection profile from your USip account, import it into the recommended client for the device and connect before opening Hulu. For Smart TV, Apple TV, Fire TV and Roku, use a router that carries the U.S. connection when the device cannot run the app itself. Two Hulu rules sit on top of the network for TVs: the app-store country decides whether the Hulu app is offered at all — a New Zealand Apple Account or Google Play account will not list it — and Hulu + Live TV’s home network cannot be set “while connected to a mobile-wireless network, including mobile hotspots, or shared Wi-Fi networks.”

Hulu setup across desktop, mobile and television devices
Windows
Windows

How to Watch Hulu on Windows from New Zealand

No app store is involved: Hulu runs in a browser, so the first test isolates the OpenVPN connection, the public IP and the browser state. Import the current USip profile, confirm the public IP reads United States, open hulu.com in a private window (Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome, Ctrl+Shift+P in Edge or Firefox) and play a title for a minute.

Step by step: the Windows setup guide.

macOS
macOS

How to Watch Hulu on macOS from New Zealand

A Mac also works best through a browser, but iCloud Private Relay can send Safari traffic through Apple’s network instead of the OpenVPN route — turn it off for the test. Import the USip profile, confirm the public IP, then play a title in a private Chrome or Safari window. If Chrome works and Safari does not, check Private Relay and Safari’s per-site location permission before touching the connection.

Step by step: the Mac setup guide.

Android
Android

Android: the setup and the one thing that catches people

On Android the IP address and the Google Play country are separate checks: the Hulu app is not offered to Google Play account, however correct the connection is. Google’s Play country rules allow one change every 90 days and Play balance does not transfer. Connect and confirm the public IP before opening Google Play or Hulu.

Step by step: the Android setup guide.

iPhone and iPad
iPhone and iPad

iPhone and iPad: the setup and the one thing that catches people

On iOS the store follows the Apple Account’s country and ignores the address entirely. Changing that country has consequences worth reading first — subscriptions, credit, rentals, family sharing — and Apple publishes what has to be settled before it will let you. Never with invented details. With the app installed, turn Location Services off for Hulu for the first test and check the public address in Safari.

What US Hulu costs in 2026, and how Hulu takes payment from New Zealand

A U.S. Hulu plan is billed in U.S. dollars to a U.S. payment method. The figures are Hulu’s own as of September 8, 2026; the payment routes are Hulu’s help centre, quoted — and none of them is something USip sells or supplies.

What US Hulu costs in 2026

Two things people get wrong. There is no free trial on Hulu (With Ads) or Hulu Premium — Hulu says trials “are currently available for the Hulu + Live TV, Disney+, and ESPN plan” only, for people who have not subscribed in the past 12 months. And prices move on their own: Hulu raised the standard plans in October 2025 and the ESPN bundles on 20 August 2026; Hulu’s plans page is the authority.

How Hulu takes payment

Cards

“U.S. based credit or debit cards”

Hulu’s payment-options page: “We accept U.S. based credit or debit cards like: American Express, Visa, Mastercard, Discover.” A card issued in New Zealand is not one of them, and Hulu’s international page adds that “you will need a U.S.-issued form of payment when you sign up.”

PayPal

“You can also use PayPal to pay for Hulu”

That is the whole of what Hulu says. Whether a PayPal account registered in New Zealand is accepted is decided by Hulu at checkout — not something this page, or USip, can promise.

Gift cards

Sold at U.S. retailers, redeemed on hulu.com

“Hulu gift cards are available at select retail outlets. You can redeem them online at hulu.com/gift or on your Account page.” hulu.com/gift is a hulu.com page and needs the same U.S. location as every other one. A gift balance is not a payment method: Hulu says the account “will automatically cancel after the entire amount on the gift card is used” unless another form of payment is added.

What Hulu shows a visitor from New Zealand, in its own words

“P-EDU101,” “Error 16” and a Disney+ page instead of Hulu — what you see from New Zealand

Hulu is unusual: it documents its location error, names the causes, and explains the reason. Three things it does from New Zealand, and what each one tells you.

The website

A Disney+ page instead of Hulu

hulu.com, loaded from New Zealand, never shows a Hulu page. Every address — the home page, the plans, the Subscriber Agreement — is handed to disneyplus.com. It is a location verdict, not a login problem, and it happens before any password is typed.

The app or player

“Error playing this video. You appear to be using an anonymous proxy tool”

Codes P-EDU101 and BYA-403-011. Hulu’s own causes: “You are accessing Hulu from outside the United States,” “You are using a VPN or VPS,” an unsupported third-party app, “a browser in private mode” or an anonymising program, and an IP address “block listed because of previous anonymous proxy use.” On iPhone and iPad the same verdict is Error 16 or “Your account is not valid in this region.”

The rule behind both

“Hulu’s content rights are restricted to the United States”

Hulu’s explanation, in full: “We need to be able to determine which connections are originating domestically, and therefore we cannot support the use of VPNs or proxies.” Read it twice: Hulu is saying, in its own voice, that it verifies location and that proxy and VPN ranges are the thing it looks for.

Why a residential IP is a different proposition — and still no guarantee. A data-centre VPN address sits in a hosting-company range — the “VPN or VPS” Hulu’s help page names — and those ranges are what its check is built to catch. A residential U.S. IP is an ordinary consumer address on a U.S. ISP, so it is not caught by the check that catches hosting ranges. Hulu still says it “cannot support the use of VPNs or proxies,” block-lists addresses and decides what its check accepts.

The questions people actually type

Hulu in New Zealand — FAQ

Is watching Hulu possible in New Zealand?

Yes, but only with two things you have to bring yourself: a U.S. Hulu account whose plan covers the title, and a connection Hulu reads as being in the United States. Hulu is explicit that “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.” and that a subscription is “intended for use by members of a single U.S. household.” A residential U.S. IP answers the second requirement and none of the first.

Is Hulu available in New Zealand?

Not as a service you can subscribe to. What is available is the Hulu hub inside Disney+ in New Zealand: Star arrived as a hub inside Disney+ in New Zealand in February 2021; on 8 October 2025 Disney renamed that hub Hulu. It is Disney’s general-entertainment section with titles licensed for New Zealand, and it comes with a Disney+ subscription — not the U.S. Hulu library, not a Hulu login, not Hulu + Live TV.

Does USip include a Hulu subscription?

No. USip and Hulu are separate services. USip supplies the residential U.S. IP connection; a Hulu account, plan, U.S.-issued payment method and content rights are Hulu’s. It does not sell gift cards, open accounts or change a billing country either.

What if Hulu still thinks I am in New Zealand?

Close Hulu, open a private window, confirm the public IP reads United States, and try again. If hulu.com still hands you to Disney+ or the app still answers P-EDU101 with the residential IP connected, treat that as a real result: check the account, the app-store region and the plan before you touch the network again. Hulu can block-list any address it chooses.

What is the anonymous proxy error?

Hulu’s way of saying it did not accept where the request came from: “Error playing this video. You appear to be using an anonymous proxy tool,” codes P-EDU101 and BYA-403-011, or Error 16 on iOS. Hulu publishes the causes itself — being outside the United States, a VPN or VPS, an unsupported app, private browsing, or an address “block listed because of previous anonymous proxy use.”

Why not just use any US VPN?

Because Hulu names what it looks for: “a VPN or VPS,” meaning hosting ranges, and addresses “block listed because of previous anonymous proxy use.” A residential U.S. IP is an ordinary household address on a U.S. ISP, so it is a different kind of thing rather than a better trick — and Hulu still decides what its check accepts.

Why is the Hulu app missing from my app store?

Because app availability follows the store account’s country, not the connection. The Hulu app is listed in the U.S. App Store and U.S. Google Play. Changing a store country is an Apple or Google decision with real consequences for credit, subscriptions and family sharing — and a browser needs no app at all, which is why the first test belongs there.

What does Hulu charge?

Hulu prices in U.S. dollars and changes them on its own schedule — the standard plans rose in October 2025 and the ESPN bundles on 20 August 2026. Rather than repeat a figure that goes stale, the current tables are kept on the hub and checked against Hulu’s plans page. One point worth knowing: there is no free trial on the standard plans.

Will it be fast enough?

There is no intentional cap on our side; the limit is your own line and the distance to the United States. Compare a speed test with and without the connection. An ordinary on-demand episode asks for a fraction of what a live 4K stream does.

Is the Hulu inside Disney+ in New Zealand the same as U.S. Hulu?

No. The name is the same because Disney made Hulu its “global General Entertainment brand on Disney+” on 8 October 2025, replacing Star. The library is not: the hub carries what Disney licenses for New Zealand, while U.S. Hulu carries the U.S. library under U.S. rights. Some Hulu originals appear in both; most of the U.S. catalogue does not travel.

Is any of this against the rules?

Two different questions. VPN software itself is legal in New Zealand. Hulu’s terms are separate and they are the ones that apply to you: Hulu says it “cannot support the use of VPNs or proxies,” that “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.,” and that it can block-list addresses. Read that clause and decide for yourself — we are not going to tell you it does not exist.

My U.S. account worked at home last week. Why not now?

Because Hulu checks where the request comes from, not where the account was opened. Nothing about the subscription changed when you travelled; the address did, and that is the layer this page is about.

One test, ten minutes, a real answer

The whole method is one run: connection up, private window on a computer, one plain title from your own plan, one full minute. From there the result is readable from New Zealand — which is more than most of an evening's guessing produces.

A pass means the location layer is done and you can move on to the device or the title you care about. A failure is only useful if you write down the exact message, because each one points somewhere different.
