Short answer: Hulu is sold in the United States and nowhere else. The international Hulu you may have read about — the tile Disney renamed from Star on 8 October 2025 — lives inside Disney+, and Disney+ does not operate in India. India has JioHotstar instead, and its US material is sold as “Hollywood” content rather than under a Hulu name.
So there are two obstacles between an Indian connection and U.S. Hulu, and they are worth keeping apart because only one of them is about the network. The first is the address: every consumer connection here, from JioFiber in Bengaluru to an Airtel handset in Jaipur, presents an Indian one. The second is payment — Hulu requires “a U.S.-issued form of payment,” and India adds its own layer of RBI rules on top.
A residential U.S. IP addresses the first and not the second. What follows is what Indian connections actually look like from outside — including an IPv6 story that is the opposite of most countries and changes how you should test — a ten-minute method you can interpret, and a straight account of the payment rules.
Two different things carry the Hulu name in 2026, and neither of them is available here — for two different reasons.
Hulu's standalone service covers the United States and certain of its territories. Sign-up requires you “To be located within the U.S.” and “a U.S.-issued form of payment.” On-demand subscribers “are able to stream anywhere in the U.S. — including Puerto Rico and U.S. military bases”; Live TV subscribers are “not able to stream in U.S. territories, on U.S. military bases, or internationally.”
On 8 October 2025 Disney renamed the Star tile inside Disney+ to Hulu across its international markets. It carries what Disney licenses locally, not the U.S. library. India is outside that rollout entirely, because Disney+ does not operate here — the Indian service is JioHotstar, and Disney is a minority partner in it.
Hulu's Subscriber Agreement is the primary source and worth reading directly. It says “Only residents of the countries and territories where we offer the Services … are eligible to subscribe,” that the service is “only available in the United States and certain of its territories,” and that you “may not access the Services from locations where we do not have rights.” It also asks you not to use “any technology or technique to obscure or disguise your location.” Better read here than discovered later.

The naming matters more than it sounds. A reader who has seen “Hulu is now available internationally” headlines may reasonably expect a tile that never arrived here — and a reader looking for a specific U.S. Hulu show may not realise JioHotstar might already carry it under a different arrangement. Both mistakes cost money in opposite directions.
Payment is a separate obstacle from location, and in India it is the more complicated of the two. Three distinct RBI mechanisms bear on this, and they are frequently conflated.

Most countries in this position have one address problem. India has two that pull in opposite directions, and the second is the one that quietly ruins tests.

That inversion is the practical trap. An IPv4-only tunnel changes what a service sees on IPv4 and leaves your real Indian IPv6 address exposed, so a site can read a U.S. address and an Indian one in the same session and believe the Indian one. This is why every test on this page asks you to check both address families rather than one — on a Jio line in particular, checking only IPv4 will tell you the connection is working when it is not.

Hulu's help page names the kind of address it distrusts — “a VPN or VPS” — and lists an address “block listed because of previous anonymous proxy use.” Those two lines, plus the IPv6 point above, explain why cheap endpoints produce ambiguity rather than information.

The aim is one clean result you can interpret, so that a failure points at one layer rather than four. The first two steps are free and India-specific, and skipping them is how people end up debugging the wrong thing.
India's own service is large and carries a great deal of Hollywood material under its Super and Premium tiers. Searching it costs nothing and settles the question for a fair number of people before any of the rest applies.
Under an RBI rule dating from January 2020, Indian cards are issued enabled for domestic use only; international and card-not-present transactions must be switched on separately through your bank's app or netbanking. Devices differ in what they conceal, not in what Hulu checks. Turn it off before testing. If Chrome plays and Safari refuses, that setting or Safari's per-site location permission is the reason, and reconnecting will not touch it.

Google Play serves apps by account country, so an Indian Google account will not list the Hulu app whatever the network reports. Changing the store region affects existing purchases and subscriptions — including any JioHotstar billing that runs through Play — so treat it as a separate decision. Apple serves the app by Apple Account country rather than by IP, so an Indian account will not show it. Changing that country affects subscriptions, store credit, rentals and family sharing, and Apple's own prerequisites come first — never with false details. Once installed, keep Location Services off for Hulu during the first controlled test and confirm both public addresses in Safari beforehand.

Where a device cannot run the connection itself — a TV, a Fire Stick, a console — it has to live on the router. That is the last step, and on a Jio or Airtel router it is also where an IPv6 leak is easiest to create and hardest to spot. Prove the account in a browser first.

With a U.S. residential address in front of it, Hulu behaves like any other streaming service. What is left is bandwidth, cached data and the app — plus one Indian specific that belongs at the top of the list.
The India-specific one, and the reason most apparently inexplicable failures here are explicable. If a checker shows United States on IPv4 and India on IPv6, the tunnel is not carrying everything and the service may be reading the address you did not change.
Bring the connection up and confirm the country before the page or app loads. Connecting afterwards means the request Hulu judged came from India, and that verdict then sits in a cookie confusing everything you try next.
Hulu asks for roughly 3 Mbps on demand, 8 Mbps for Live TV and 16 Mbps for 4K. Run the speed test with the connection up — the number that counts is the one to the United States, not to a Mumbai peering point, and on Indian networks those two differ a great deal.

Hulu can keep selected titles on a phone or tablet. Two gates decide whether it is available to you, and neither is a network question.
Downloads exist only in the Hulu mobile and tablet apps on a current version — not in a desktop browser and not on a TV.
Offline downloads are a Hulu Premium (No Ads) feature. On an ad-supported plan the control is simply absent, and no connection restores it.

The practical consequence is that an IPv4-only tunnel leaves that Indian IPv6 address in plain view, so always check both.
UPI cannot reach a US merchant — its international acceptance covers a specific list of countries that does not include the United States, and there is no UPI rail for US e-commerce. Hulu's help page names “a VPN or VPS” among the causes of its location error and lists an address “block listed because of previous anonymous proxy use” — a shared data-centre address matches that description. And on an IPv6-heavy Indian line, an IPv4-only tunnel leaks the real address anyway, so you can present a U.S. IPv4 and an Indian IPv6 simultaneously without realising it.
Disney has said it will fold Hulu into a unified Disney+ app during 2026, and the Hulu app on Nintendo Switch ended on 5 February 2026. Disney has separately said it has no current plans to sunset the standalone app on the main platforms, no shutdown date has been announced, and standalone subscriptions are still sold.
