Disney+ Covers Southeast Asia, With One Gap
The useful thing to establish first is that this is not a regional absence. Disney+ is sold on every side of Vietnam, in markets of very different sizes and very different income levels.
That matters because it eliminates most of the explanations people reach for. Vietnam is not too small, too poor, too far from Disney’s existing operations, or in a region Disney has skipped.
| Market | Disney+ | What that rules out |
|---|
| Indonesia | Yes | “Disney has not come to Southeast Asia” |
| Malaysia | Yes | “The market is too small” — Vietnam is far larger |
| Singapore | Yes | “Too far from the region” |
| Thailand | Yes | “Only English-language markets” |
| Philippines | Yes | “Only high-income markets” |
| Vietnam | No | — and the next section is about what is actually different here |
Vietnam is not short of streaming, either. The domestic market is unusually well developed for the region, with several established local platforms competing for the same households a Disney+ launch would target. What none of them is, is Disney+.
What is actually missing
Be precise about the gap, because it decides whether any of the rest of this page is worth your time. Disney’s theatrical films reach Vietnam through ordinary distribution and appear on local platforms under local licensing arrangements that change from year to year. What has no Vietnamese route at all is the Disney+ exclusive catalogue — the Marvel and Star Wars series made for the service, the Disney+ documentaries, the back catalogue that was pulled onto the platform when it launched.
If the thing you want is a film that played in Vietnamese cinemas, check the local platforms first; it may well be there and you would be paying for a connection you do not need. If the thing you want is a series that only ever existed on Disney+, there is no Vietnamese route to it, and the rest of this page is about what that means.
