NBC in Canada: Check Your Channel Lineup First

Canada is the one country where a large share of readers can stop reading after the first section. Canadian providers sell American NBC stations as ordinary channels — and the shows themselves moved house twice in 2026.

The short version

Short answer

Several Canadian providers carry a U.S. NBC station outright: VMedia lists “NBC Detroit” and “NBC Buffalo” in a CA$19 package and Rogers sells “NBC” for CA$3 a month. Separately, the Chicago franchise and Law & Order are on Citytv and Citytv+, and Saturday Night Live moved to CTV and Crave for season 52 this autumn. A residential U.S. IP address is for something narrower: the free, sign-in-free part of NBC.com.

Canadian Providers Sell American NBC Stations

This is the part almost no guide mentions, and it is printed in the providers’ own channel lineups.

Canada sits next to the United States, and Canadian television has carried American border stations for decades. That has not stopped. Several providers still sell an NBC signal as a normal channel, at a normal price, and two of them name the market in their own lineup.

So before considering anything technical, open your provider’s channel list and search for NBC. For a lot of readers the search ends there.

Read on 26 September 2026 from each provider’s own pages

ProviderPrinted in their own lineup asWhere it sits
VMedia“NBC Detroit” and “NBC Buffalo”Starter TV, CA$19 a month — also in Premium Flex and Grand Premium
Rogers Xfinity TV“NBC”Prime Time Theme Pack, CA$3 a month, filed under distant channels
Shaw Direct“NBC East HD (Detroit)”, “NBC West HD (Seattle)”Named in its own channel-listing PDF
Telus“NBC Boston HD”, “NBC Seattle HD”Named in its own channel-list PDF
Bell Fibe TV“NBC”, channel 220 / HD 1220No market named on the Ontario PDF, current as of February 2026
Eastlink“NBC”, channel 621No market named

Rogers files its NBC under distant channels, and its own definition explains the whole arrangement in a single clause — signals “whose broadcast signals can’t be received over-the-air in a particular area”. That is precisely what an American network is in most of Canada.

Two honest limits on the table above. First, none of these companies prints call letters, so this page names markets rather than stations: “the Detroit NBC station” rather than a set of four letters we worked out ourselves. Second, Cogeco’s channel pages refuse automated requests, so Cogeco is absent here rather than excluded — check it directly if that is your provider.

“whose broadcast signals can’t be received over-the-air in a particular area” — Rogers — what a distant channel is

One thing to expect if you do watch that channel. Canada’s simultaneous-substitution rule lets a Canadian broadcaster’s feed replace the American one when both are showing comparable programming at the same time, which is why the adverts on an American channel in Canada are often Canadian. The Super Bowl was briefly exempted from this; it is not any more. The regulator’s 2015 exemption was quashed by the Supreme Court of Canada in December 2019, and since 1 July 2020 a binding direction under the CUSMA trade agreement requires that the rules “do not in the future prohibit simultaneous substitution during the broadcast of the Super Bowl”. No exemption exists today and none is pending.

The shows, not the channel

Both of NBC’s Biggest Canadian Homes Changed in 2026

If what you actually want is a series rather than a live channel, two things moved this year — and anything written before them is wrong.

The dramas are on Citytv, and stream on Citytv+. Rogers published its 2026/27 primetime slate on 28 May 2026 and named the lot: Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.; Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and the Canadian-made Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent; plus the two brand-new NBC dramas, Line of Fire and The Rockford Files.

Here is the detail that explains why this is hard to find. Rogers’ announcement never uses the word “NBC”. Not once. Anyone searching for NBC in Canada is searching for a word that does not appear on the page that actually holds the rights.

Saturday Night Live is now on CTV and Crave. Bell Media announced it on 13 April 2026, negotiated with NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution, to be simulcast exclusively from season 52 this autumn.

“Crave and CTV are proud to be the new home of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE in Canada.” — Bell Media — Justin Stockman, VP Global Content, 13 April 2026

Global held Saturday Night Live for decades and kept it through the end of season 51, which ran to 16 May 2026. Every page still saying “SNL is on Global” was right until this spring and is wrong now. Corus published its own 2026/27 slate on 2 June 2026 and it contains no NBC titles at all.

On the football: Bell Media holds exclusive Canadian NFL rights and its 2022 agreement names Sunday Night Football explicitly, with the Sunday evening window carried on TSN, CTV and RDS. DAZN also sells an NFL package in Canada, but whether Sunday Night Football is live within it could not be established for this guide, so it is not presented as a route.

One gap stated rather than hidden. Rogers says Citytv “remains” the home of these series, which implies continuity rather than a fresh 2026 switch — so this page does not date when the Chicago and Law & Order rights arrived there. Only the Saturday Night Live move is precisely dated, because only that one was announced as a move.

What NBC costs

NBC Costs Nothing. Here Is What It Asks For Instead.

There is no NBC subscription to buy — not here, and not in America either. What there is instead is three layers, and only one of them is about money.

Start with the part nobody says clearly: NBC does not sell anything. Its own help centre puts it in six words.

“We do not charge for access to our sites or apps” — NBC Help Centre — NBC sites and apps are free to use

So the comparison every other guide on this site makes — the American price against the local one — does not exist here. What exists is three layers of access, each with a different gatekeeper.

The three NBC layers, from NBC’s own help centre

LayerWhat it costsWhat it actually needs
Clips and recent full episodes on NBC.com and in the NBC appNothingNo account of any kind. This is the layer a network address reaches.
Locked full episodesNothing extraA sign-in to a participating U.S. television provider. An address is not a credential.
The live NBC streamNothing extraA U.S. provider sign-in and a billing address inside that station’s own viewing area.
Past seasonsVaries, and often elsewhereWhoever holds the rights that year — frequently not NBC

“Some video content (long-form full episodes and short-form clips) requires authentication – meaning you have to sign in to your TV service provider.” — NBC Help Centre — what needs a sign-in

The television-provider sign-in is the one people misread as a paywall. It is not NBC charging: it is NBC checking that somebody else already charged you. NBC names Xfinity, DirecTV Now, Dish, Sling, Spectrum and YouTube TV as examples. Every one of them bills a U.S. address, and none of them is something a network connection supplies.

And when a season you remember has simply gone, that is usually not a location problem at all:

“the streaming rights for past seasons were not available. In some cases, a studio or other rights holder may license past seasons to other streaming video services like Netflix, Hulu or Amazon.” — NBC Help Centre — why past seasons disappear

For a Canadian reader all of this lands in an unusual place: the money question is almost never the obstacle. NBC charges nothing, a provider channel costs a few dollars, and Citytv+ and Crave are subscriptions you may already hold. What a residential U.S. IP address addresses is narrower and more specific — the free layer of NBC.com itself.

What NBC publishes, and what it does not

What NBC Says About Where You Are

What NBC publishes about where you are — and the thing it pointedly does not publish, which matters just as much.

This is the section worth reading twice, because almost every other page on the subject gets it the wrong way round.

NBC has never published a page saying NBC.com is United States-only. Its help centre has a whole “Watching Video” category, and there is no article about countries, travel or location in it. Compare ABC, which publishes exactly such a statement. NBC does not. This page therefore does not claim NBC says it.

What NBCUniversal does publish, in the eligibility clause of its Terms of Service, is more open than almost anything comparable — and it is worth reading closely, because it names people outside the United States on purpose:

“The NBCUniversal Services are for users who are 18 years of age or older and reside in the United States (including its territories and possessions), or those outside the United States who, to the maximum extent permissible under applicable law, consent to use the NBCUniversal Services in accordance with U.S. laws and these TOS.” — NBCUniversal Terms of Service, section 1.2 — Eligibility

Two groups, not one. Residents of the United States and its territories — and, separately, people outside the United States who consent to use the services under U.S. law. There is no clause forbidding you from being abroad.

That cuts both ways, and the second way matters more. Those terms turn on where you reside, which is a fact about your life rather than about your connection. No network address changes it, and nothing on this page suggests one does. What an address can affect is the technical layer underneath — and NBC documents that layer only for the live stream, where the rules are precise:

“The live stream always requires authorization from a TV provider.” — NBC Help Centre — the live stream

“The NBC website and apps will only show you the local NBC station where you are physically located.” — NBC Help Centre — how the station is chosen

“We can’t show you the NBC station from somewhere else in the country.” — NBC Help Centre — and what it will not do

“The billing address on file with your TV provider must be located within your local viewing area.” — NBC Help Centre — the requirement that decides it

Read those four together and the live stream resolves into something no connection can arrange on its own. NBC serves the station belonging to wherever you appear to be. It will not serve a different one on request. And it wants the billing address on your television-provider account to sit inside that same viewing area. Two separate facts have to agree, and only one of them is a network address.

NBC also warns that the map has holes in it:

“While streams are available in most markets, there are still occasional gaps in coverage.” — NBC Help Centre — coverage is not complete

The other half of the confusion is Peacock, which people reach for assuming it is the way round all of this. It is not sold here either, and Peacock is unusually clear about where it works:

“Peacock is currently available to stream within the United States and certain U.S. territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands).” — Peacock Help — where Peacock is available

Fifty states and American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Nothing else, and no country in this guide.

One last distinction, because it is the reason searching for “NBC” abroad turns up so little. NBCUniversal does not use the NBC name outside America. On its own Latin American site the Chicago franchise and the Law & Order titles are listed under Universal TV; in Europe its content travels through SkyShowtime and ordinary licensing deals; reality goes to Hayu. Four brands, none of them the three letters you searched for.

What USip actually sells

What a Residential US IP Address Changes — and What It Does Not

One layer of the stack, described plainly, with the other layers left where they are.

It changes

  • The public network address NBC reads — to an ordinary residential U.S. one, rather than a hosting range
  • The free, unauthenticated layer: clips and recent full episodes on NBC.com, which need no account at all and are the layer an address genuinely reaches
  • Consistency: one U.S. address from the first page load through playback, rather than a different one every hour

It cannot change

  • A television-provider sign-in, which is the gate on every locked episode and on the live stream
  • Which local NBC station you are offered. NBC serves the one belonging to wherever you appear to be, and USip sells a dedicated residential U.S. IP rather than a choice of market
  • A billing address inside a station’s viewing area, a sports blackout, or rights to a programme outside its window
  • Whether NBC serves you. NBC decides that, and nothing on this page is a guarantee that it will.

USip sells the network part and nothing else. Every NBC rule above still applies in full.

Canada has a particular reason to keep these layers apart. If your provider carries an NBC channel, the live-television problem is already solved by someone who is allowed to solve it, and no network address is involved. If what you want is NBC.com, that is a separate question with a separate answer.

And the live stream on NBC.com stays out of reach either way: it wants a television-provider sign-in whose billing address sits inside an American station’s viewing area, which a Canadian account is not.

Four Checks Worth Making From Canada

Each one is quick, and each one can save an evening of guessing which layer failed.

1

Search your own channel lineup for NBC before anything else

VMedia, Rogers, Shaw Direct, Telus, Bell and Eastlink all list an NBC channel in their own published lineups. On Rogers it is CA$3 a month. This is the cheapest possible answer and it takes a minute to rule in or out.

2

If you want a series, check Citytv+ and Crave, not NBC

The Chicago franchise and Law & Order are on Citytv+; Saturday Night Live is on CTV and Crave from season 52. Neither Rogers nor Bell uses the word NBC, which is why searching for it finds nothing.

3

Ignore anything that says Global

Global carried Saturday Night Live for decades and lost it this spring, and Corus’s 2026/27 slate has no NBC titles at all. A page mentioning Global is a page written before April 2026.

4

Test the free layer on its own, in a clean browser

Connect the residential U.S. address, open a private desktop window, and play one ordinary unlocked clip on NBC.com. No sign-in, no live stream, no app. One result, one variable — and it is the one layer an address is supposed to fix.

Setting Up a US IP for NBC, One Device at a Time

Four recordings, one per device. Start on a computer, where the detected country and the playback error are both visible, and move to the television last.

Windows

Connect first, confirm the public U.S. address, then open a private window and play one unlocked NBC clip before anything else.

Mac

Use a private Safari window or a current Chromium browser. If one browser plays and another does not, look at cookies, extensions, Private Relay and location permission before blaming the network.

iPhone and iPad

Get the clean browser result first. Do not change an Apple Account country because an older recording shows that step — it is not what stops NBC.

Android and TV devices

Confirm the address and browser playback before opening the app. Google Play country and television support are separate questions from the network address.

What these recordings are good for, and what they are not. All four were made in December 2022, so they show the connection sequence on each device accurately and they show NBC as it looked then. Since filming, NBC’s site and apps have been redesigned, the list of participating television providers has changed, and Peacock’s prices and footprint have moved. Follow the videos for the network setup; take everything about accounts, plans, app stores and payment from NBC’s own current pages rather than from a four-year-old screen recording.

One Canadian caveat on the recordings. If your provider already carries an NBC channel, none of this applies to it — that signal arrives through your set-top box and wants nothing from a network address. These four are for reaching NBC.com itself.

The questions people actually type

NBC in Canada — FAQ

Can I subscribe to NBC in Canada?

There is nothing to subscribe to. NBC does not sell a subscription in Canada, and it does not sell one in the United States either — its own help centre says “We do not charge for access to our sites or apps”. What some content asks for instead is a sign-in to an American television provider, which is a different thing from a price.

Is Peacock available in Canada?

No. Peacock names its territories precisely: the United States plus American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Canada is not among them, and there is no Peacock subscription sold there under any arrangement.

Does NBC say NBC.com is blocked outside the United States?

Not for on-demand video, no — and this is worth being exact about. NBC’s help centre has a “Watching Video” category with no article about countries or location in it at all. The US-location requirement NBC does publish is for the live stream: you must be physically in the United States, and your provider’s billing address must be inside that station’s viewing area. Pages that quote the live rule as though it covered everything are quoting the wrong paragraph.

Can a residential US IP get me the NBC station I want?

No, and nobody can sell you that. NBC says its site and apps “will only show you the local NBC station where you are physically located” and that it cannot show a station from elsewhere in the country. USip sells a dedicated residential U.S. IP address, not a choice of city or market, so which station appears is not something this page can promise.

What does a residential US IP actually change for NBC?

One layer: the public network address NBC reads. That layer is worth isolating because the free, unauthenticated part of NBC.com asks for nothing else — no account, no sign-in, no payment — so for that part there is no other layer to get wrong. Whether NBC then plays is NBC’s decision and not something this page can promise, which is why the three-day trial is the sensible way to find out. Everything above that layer — the provider sign-in, the live stream — is untouched.

Do NBC’s terms say I am not allowed to watch from Canada?

No, and NBCUniversal is unusually explicit about it. Its Terms of Service name two groups: people who reside in the United States and its territories, and “those outside the United States who, to the maximum extent permissible under applicable law, consent to use the NBCUniversal Services in accordance with U.S. laws and these TOS”. Note what that turns on, though: where you reside. That is a fact about your life, not about your connection, and no network address alters it.

Is there an NBC channel in Canada?

No. NBCUniversal does not use the NBC name outside America. Its own Latin American site lists the Chicago franchise and the Law & Order titles under Universal TV; in Europe the same content reaches viewers through SkyShowtime and ordinary licensing to local broadcasters, and its reality programming goes to Hayu. Searching for the three letters is why the answer feels hidden.

Which Canadian providers carry an NBC channel?

From their own published lineups: VMedia (“NBC Detroit” and “NBC Buffalo”, Starter TV at CA$19 a month), Rogers Xfinity TV (“NBC” in the Prime Time Theme Pack, CA$3 a month), Shaw Direct (Detroit and Seattle), Telus (Boston and Seattle), Bell Fibe and Eastlink (both list “NBC” without naming a market). Cogeco could not be checked.

Where can I watch the Chicago shows and Law & Order in Canada?

Citytv, streaming on Citytv+. Rogers named Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU on its 2026/27 slate on 28 May 2026, along with the two new NBC dramas Line of Fire and The Rockford Files.

Is Saturday Night Live still on Global in Canada?

No, not since this spring. CTV and Crave are the new home from season 52, announced by Bell Media on 13 April 2026 and simulcast exclusively. Global kept it only through the end of season 51, which ran to 16 May 2026.

Why do American channels in Canada show Canadian adverts?

Simultaneous substitution. When a Canadian broadcaster is showing comparable programming at the same time, its feed replaces the American one. The Super Bowl was exempted from 2017, the Supreme Court of Canada quashed that exemption in December 2019, and a binding CUSMA direction in force since 1 July 2020 requires that the rules not prohibit substitution during the Super Bowl. So there is no exemption now.

Who has Sunday Night Football in Canada?

Bell Media — TSN, CTV and RDS. Its 2022 NFL agreement names Sunday Night Football explicitly and the Sunday evening window appears on TSN’s own schedule. DAZN sells an NFL package in Canada too, but whether Sunday Night Football is live inside it could not be established, so this page does not claim it.

Verify Before You Change Anything

Rights, prices and carriage all move. Every factual claim on this page links to the page it came from.

NBC is a third-party service and is not affiliated with USip. NBCUniversal controls what its sites and apps show, which items need a TV-provider sign-in, which station a location is served, and all content rights — and all of them change.

Start with one test, not every device

Work out which layer is actually stopping you before you change anything else. Connect the residential U.S. address, open a private desktop window, and play one ordinary unlocked clip on NBC.com — not a locked episode, and not the live stream. If that plays, the network layer is solved and everything still missing is an account or a rights question. If it does not, nothing above it was ever going to work. That single result tells you more than an evening of retrying will.
