Netflix in Mainland China: 3 Body Problem, Downloads and Travel
Netflix explicitly lists China among the places where its service is unavailable. An existing subscription does not open a mainland Netflix catalogue. For Three-Body fans there is a practical local choice, but the Chinese television adaptation and the Netflix series are different productions.

Search in Chinese for 三体 电视剧 and you may see clips of a cast you do not recognize. In January 2023, CCTV reported that the Chinese adaptation was airing on its drama channel. CCTV later identified actor Zhang Luyi (张鲁一) at an event with the production team. Those are useful details for finding the Chinese version by year and actor. Netflix’s 3 Body Problem has its own episode guide. Its first episode is Countdown. Use that title to identify the Netflix adaptation when someone sends you a Chinese search result. The CCTV links are broadcast reporting. They do not provide the Netflix episode or confirm that every episode of the Chinese series is currently available on demand. Search 三体 电视剧 张鲁一 for the Chinese adaptation. Netflix’s separate series begins with the episode Countdown.
Distinguish a saved title from a download
Open the Downloads tab on the phone or tablet. A title in My List may still need an internet connection.
Recognize error 22004
Keep the downloaded episode if you plan to return. Netflix says to reconnect in a country where the title is available and reopen the app.
Why an episode downloaded at home can stop
Netflix documents a particularly useful clue: error 22004. A downloaded title can become unavailable after the device goes online in a country where Netflix does not offer it. Netflix says you can keep the download. Once back in a country where the title is available, connect to the internet and launch the app so it can recognize your location. Before departure, check the actual Downloads tab on the device you will carry. Record the series, episode and any expiry message. A show saved to My List is only a bookmark. Avoid making an essential part of a long trip depend on a download remaining licensed throughout it.
Returning from Beijing to Hong Kong or Taipei
Check your physical location before changing your account. A mainland stop and a subsequent stay in Hong Kong or Taiwan can produce different results. Netflix’s availability page explicitly names China and explains that catalogues vary. A title you see after leaving the mainland cannot establish that it was streamable in Beijing. If the account still shows a location warning after travel, open Netflix on your regular connection and record which device fails. For a download error, reopen the app while online. For a missing season, search for the exact title on that device. Troubleshooting Wi-Fi alone will not restore regional rights.
Moving and billing are separate decisions
Netflix says an account’s country cannot be changed unless you move to another one. A temporary trip does not require a new membership or a second payment. An American-looking connection also does not promise the U.S. library: Netflix says VPN users may see only titles for which it has global rights.
