discovery+ in Mainland China: Where to Watch Discovery Documentaries

01A Discovery production with an actual mainland episode list

Bilibili’s listing for 决胜荒野之华夏秘境 identifies Bilibili and Discovery as co-producers and lists six episodes from 2020. The first takes place in the Bashan Mountains in Shaanxi; the second is set in the Aksai desert. This gives you two concrete ways to match the programme if a translated series title is unfamiliar. In Bilibili search, 德爷 is also useful for finding Ed Stafford.

Look at the official episode list rather than everything that appears under the search term. All six entries on the page are marked 会员 (member). A result containing 解说 or 一口气看完 may be someone’s recap. Read the actual membership prompt on the device where you plan to watch. Buying that Bilibili entitlement does not purchase the US discovery+ catalogue.

02Cooking and travel documentaries have another route

If you wanted a food documentary rather than a particular American series, CCTV lists the first season of A Bite of China as seven episodes. Start with 自然的馈赠, the first episode. 主食的故事 is the second. Search 舌尖上的中国 第一季 for the series and 选集 for the episode selector. These are CCTV programmes; they offer an alternative evening’s viewing without any claim that a Food Network or Discovery series has moved to CCTV.

For an exact episode of an American programme, note the original title and season first. A series logo on a Chinese documentary collection is weaker evidence than a numbered entry on the local provider’s own episode list.

03What the US subscription covers on a trip

The US help centre describes where discovery+ subscribers can stream while travelling. Mainland China is absent from its list. A subscription bought in the US does not become a local Bilibili membership. A listing in Hong Kong or Taiwan cannot establish the mainland offer either. There is no verified mainland playback test behind this guide.

04Check the download on the device you will take

Discovery limits mobile downloads to eligible titles and ad-free subscribers. On the phone or tablet you will carry, check for the download arrow beside the actual episode. Let it finish, then open Downloads before leaving. A saved favourite or the availability of a trailer does not put the episode on the device. The help centre explains how to renew an expired download. Do not rely on being able to renew it after arrival. If working offline is essential, settle that question before spending money on a separate connection.
