HBO Max in China: Game of Thrones on Bilibili and Regional Access

01What Bilibili lists for season one

Bilibili’s official series page is titled 权力的游戏 第一季. It identifies a completed first season with ten episodes and displays 大会员, its premium membership label. This is a series catalogue entry, which is more useful than a user-uploaded recap. Open it in the Bilibili account and on the device you expect to use. If you want episode ten, select that episode before considering a membership. Look for the runtime, audio track and subtitles. The season-one page does not establish the availability of later seasons or the related series House of the Dragon. We verified what the catalogue lists, without a local subscriber playback test. 02Why older guides send you to Tencent instead

There is a real reason Tencent appears in so many searches. HBO and Tencent announced a Chinese online distribution agreement covering series including Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and The Newsroom. That historical announcement documents how HBO programmes reached China. It does not establish that Tencent still carries every season or retains exclusive rights today. If you already pay for Tencent Video, search the Chinese series name there first. If you find only interviews or recaps, compare its actual episode selector with the Bilibili season listing. Check for an extra charge before opening a second mainland subscription. A Tencent or Bilibili membership uses that company’s own account.

03Travelling between Hong Kong and the mainland

If HBO Max worked in Hong Kong before you travelled to Guangzhou, check the country list before changing your password. HBO Max treats Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as separately supported locations. The provider’s advice for a mistaken region warning begins with a condition: you must actually be in a supported place. HBO Max’s country list and region-error instructions

On return to a supported market, HBO Max recommends disabling a VPN or proxy if the app still misidentifies your region. If needed, restart your network and contact your internet provider. That advice can resolve a location error in Hong Kong. It does not add mainland China to the supported list. HBO Max’s country list and region-error instructions

04Pay for the programme and device you will use

For a local offer, note the platform, season, episode number, membership level and language options shown at checkout. If the phone works but the television requests payment, inspect the TV app’s entitlement under the same account before subscribing again. For an existing HBO Max membership, manage renewal through the provider on the original receipt. Paying for internet access or a U.S. IP buys neither a Bilibili membership nor an HBO Max plan.
