No Korean HBO Max has ever existed. The shows do arrive — one platform has them exclusively — but if you have ever felt you were watching a week behind everyone online, you were not imagining it.
HBO Max has never operated in South Korea, and nothing has been announced. Since 21 March 2025, Coupang Play has been the exclusive Korean home of HBO and HBO Max originals. The catch is the calendar: on the two releases Coupang has dated itself, new episodes arrived three days after the American premiere, on a Wednesday evening. The U.S. live-sports slate is not part of the deal at all.

This is the one fact about HBO in Korea that is worth knowing before you pay anybody, and Coupang publishes it itself.
Coupang Play announced on 21 March 2025 that it would carry HBO and HBO Max originals exclusively in Korea — the first Korean platform to do so officially. The catalogue that came with it was the real one: Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, Succession, The White Lotus, Euphoria, Chernobyl, The Last of Us.

Two titles is two titles, and this page is not going to claim every HBO release behaves this way. But both of the releases Coupang has dated publicly landed on the Wednesday after a Sunday premiere, which is long enough for the internet to have spoiled the episode twice over.
Compare that with Canada, where the exclusive licensee publishes a schedule matching the American slot. Same company, same shows, two licensees, and a three-day difference in what a subscriber experiences — there is a page on that market too.

The second Korean peculiarity is that there is no Coupang Play subscription to buy. It is an entitlement on Coupang’s retail membership: since June 2025 most of the catalogue has been available to general members free with advertising, while the WOW membership carries a monthly fee, and live sport sits behind a separate Sports Pass covering leagues Coupang licensed on its own — the Premier League, the NBA and the Club World Cup among them.
None of which includes what HBO Max sells in America. MLB, the NHL, March Madness and the U.S. national soccer teams are United States rights on a United States plan, and no Korean subscription carries them.

Korea stands out because its neighbours do not. HBO Max runs under its own name across much of Southeast Asia, and Japan gets it on 1 October 2026. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement of the Japanese launch names no other Asian market, and there is no Korean equivalent to point to.
It is worth being precise about what the Japanese launch even is. It is not a Japanese HBO Max app: the release says HBO Max will be available there as a hub inside Prime Video and the Hulu service. A Korean reader watching that and expecting a standalone Korean launch is reading more into it than it says.

That sports line is the part that does not travel and the part most people are actually after. In HBO Max’s own words:

Two things follow that are worth separating. A subscription does not stop existing when you cross a border — billing, plan and profiles carry on. What changes is what the app will play, and in a country HBO Max does not serve, the answer is nothing.
The availability list is also the thing to check rather than trust second-hand. It is edited as markets launch, and it has lagged: Japan is getting HBO Max on 1 October 2026 inside Prime Video and Hulu, which is the kind of change that reaches the press before it reaches the help centre.

No. HBO Max publishes the list of countries and regions it serves, and South Korea is not on it. Nothing has been announced either.
No — it was never there. There has been no Korean HBO Max to withdraw. That matters because “bring it back” campaigns are arguing for something that never existed.
No, and this is the error nearly every page on the subject makes. HBO Max passed 100 markets in October 2025 and its own list runs to roughly 140 countries and territories. It is simply not sold in South Korea.
Warner Bros. Discovery. Paramount Skydance agreed to buy it, and that deal had not closed as of 22 September 2026 — Netflix, which was reported as a bidder, withdrew. Nobody has said what any of it means for licences outside the United States, so this page does not guess.
