Vudu in Mainland China: What Happens to Fandango Purchases and Rentals?

USip Editorial · Updated

Fandango at Home, formerly Vudu, limits access to its streaming service and content to the United States. A purchased film in My Library does not come with mainland Chinese playback rights. If a rental overlaps your flight, check the rental window on its receipt before pressing Play.

Monthly plan renews after the trial. Streaming access is separate.

In this guide

Separate the receipt, rental clock and playback country

Open the receipt for the individual movie. A purchase goes into your account library under its usage rights. A rental has a limited viewing period. Fandango’s streaming policy sets the territory and explains that the rights displayed for each item govern the device and viewing conditions. Being able to see cover art, a purchase confirmation or a balance tells you little about whether the feature can play abroad.

For a rental, write down both deadlines if the offer shows them: the time to begin watching and the time to finish after starting. Do this before testing the first few seconds on your last night in the US. Read the clock displayed by the retailer; a generic “48 hours” from another movie or store is a poor basis for planning a flight. Another purchase or rental would still face the territory restriction.

Viewing checklist

Three checks before you watch

  1. Identify the order

Check whether your receipt says rental or purchase. A title appearing in My Library does not show that it can play abroad.

  2. Read the title’s rental window

Write down both deadlines shown on the offer before pressing Play. Use the retailer’s dates for this film.

  3. Verify a mainland edition

Match the Chinese title 流浪地球2, release year and runtime. Check 单片付费 for a per-film price and 字幕 for subtitles before paying again.

What a downloaded purchase can and cannot tell you

Fandango Support describes downloading purchased movies and television shows in the streaming app. Before departure, inspect the specific purchase and device for the download control, complete the download and check that it appears on that device. Do not infer the same option for a rental or a different phone. The technical ability to store a file does not remove the territorial terms or establish that the app can reauthorise it in China.

If your movie appears in a linked Movies Anywhere account, keep the retailer and the linked library straight. Fandango identifies Movies Anywhere as a separate locker service. The second icon is not a worldwide viewing licence. Keep your order number and use the seller on the receipt for billing problems.

Identify the mainland edition before paying twice

For a local film search, use the Chinese title, release year and running time. An example is 1905 Movie Network’s record for The Wandering Earth II: 流浪地球2, the 2023 film, is listed at 173 minutes. Those details help distinguish the feature from a trailer, a making-of documentary or the first film. The database record identifies the work. It does not promise a rental or an included stream.

Look for 正片 (feature), 租看 (rent) or 单片付费 (pay per film). Check 国语 for Mandarin audio and 字幕 for subtitles. A mainland purchase would belong to that retailer; it would not import your Fandango library. Hong Kong and Taiwan storefronts may display different offers.

If you simply want a movie tonight

CCTV-6 publishes a mainland film channel and its schedule. Check the film title and broadcast time rather than expecting to start a particular movie on demand. This provides a practical alternative when a US rental cannot travel. Buying USip would pay for network access, not for a Fandango viewing right, a refund or a Chinese rental.

Connection setup by device

Use the Fandango streaming app on an eligible device to check downloads before departure. A browser bookmark, a desktop library entry or a phone download does not transfer a movie to a hotel television.

If the video player does not load on your network, open the written instructions for your device.

USip connection plans

USip sells the network connection separately. Check the service’s location rules and the account needed for your title before choosing a plan. The price below covers USip only.

Common questions

Will a failed stream in China delete my Fandango purchase?

A territorial playback message is not proof of deletion. Check the original account and receipt before repurchasing.

Does every rental have the same window?

Use the window printed on that title’s offer or receipt, including any separate clock that begins when playback starts.

Can I transfer a Vudu purchase to a Chinese streaming service?

A Chinese film listing is a separate retail or subscription offer. No transfer of a US library purchase was verified.
