The Nigerian story in 2026 is not about price rising. It is about who is on the right side of a line.
Showmax was a standalone subscription: anyone could buy it on its own. When it closed on 30 April 2026, its Originals — the Nollywood and pan-African slate, The Wife, Wura, Youngins and the rest — moved into a section of DStv Stream. MultiChoice’s own Nigerian announcement is precise about who reaches them:

The gap is the story. A viewer on Padi pays ₦4,400 a month and gets none of the library that was, until April, available to anyone who wanted to buy it separately. Reaching it means moving to Compact at ₦19,000 — more than four times the entry package. A library commissioned for the widest possible Nigerian audience now sits behind one of the more expensive tiers in the market.
One thing this page will not tell you, because MultiChoice does not: whether Compact Plus is included. The announcement names Compact and Premium and says nothing about the tier sitting between them. If that is your package, ask rather than assume.
As for HBO itself — it is not in any of these boxes. A last-minute arrangement at the start of 2026 kept twelve Warner Bros. Discovery channels on DStv and GOtv across roughly fifty African markets, Nigeria among them, but those are documentary, news and children’s channels. The HBO premium library is not sold in Nigeria by anybody.

Nigeria produces more feature films a year than almost anywhere on earth and exports them across the continent. It has a young, largely English-speaking, heavily mobile audience. On the usual measures of where a streaming service goes next, it is a conspicuous candidate.
It is also worth knowing how these launches have actually happened. India got HBO Max in April 2026 and Japan gets it on 1 October 2026 — in both cases as a hub inside a service that was already there, not as a standalone app, and in India’s case at a price of around fifty rupees a month. That shape would suit a market like Nigeria. Nobody has announced it, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

Two things follow that are worth separating. A subscription does not stop existing when you cross a border — billing, plan and profiles carry on. What changes is what the app will play, and in a country HBO Max does not serve, the answer is nothing.
The availability list is also the thing to check rather than trust second-hand. It is edited as markets launch, and it has lagged: Japan is getting HBO Max on 1 October 2026 inside Prime Video and Hulu, which is the kind of change that reaches the press before it reaches the help centre.
