The most revealing document in this story is a single agreement that treats Europe and Africa completely differently.
On 31 December 2025, the day the old arrangement expired, Canal+ and Warner Bros. Discovery announced a new multi-year, multi-territory deal. For African viewers it secured twelve linear channels — Discovery, CNN International, TLC, TNT Africa, Cartoon Network, Food Network and the rest.
For seven European countries, the same agreement granted something else entirely: HBO Max, HBO and Cinemax — in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Belgium and Austria. Africa was not among them, and South African reporting at the time noted the deal contained no mention of HBO Max, the HBO library, or any streaming integration for the African market.

Reports of changes to M-Net's HBO and Warner catalogue are evidence of a changing licensing arrangement, not a complete current inventory of every series. MultiChoice's statement describes the role of studio licensing:

Then the streaming option closed too. Showmax stopped taking new subscribers on 31 March 2026 and shut down on 30 April 2026, after operating losses widened from R2.6 billion to R4.9 billion. Its Originals moved into a section of DStv Stream. South Africa’s competition authorities have been examining whether that closure is consistent with the conditions attached to Canal+’s takeover of MultiChoice — an investigation, not a finding.
The distinction is between a direct HBO Max service and locally licensed programmes. No direct South African HBO Max subscription is established here; the availability of each HBO or Max series must be checked separately.

HBO Max publishes its own country list. For an African reader the striking thing is not which countries are missing — it is that the continent is missing.

That is worth sitting with. HBO Max reached Nepal, Bhutan and Timor-Leste. It reached Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. It did not reach the largest economy on the African continent, in a country with a long-established pay-television market and an English-speaking audience.
And the list itself is a floor rather than a ceiling. It did not list India for months after HBO Max launched there in April 2026, because that launch was a hub inside JioHotstar rather than a standalone app — the same shape as the Japanese launch on 1 October 2026. If HBO Max ever arrives in South Africa, that is the likelier shape. Nobody has announced it.

That sports line is the part that does not travel and the part most people are actually after. In HBO Max’s own words:

Two things follow that are worth separating. A subscription does not stop existing when you cross a border — billing, plan and profiles carry on. What changes is what the app will play, and in a country HBO Max does not serve, the answer is nothing.
The availability list is also the thing to check rather than trust second-hand. It is edited as markets launch, and it has lagged: Japan is getting HBO Max on 1 October 2026 inside Prime Video and Hulu, which is the kind of change that reaches the press before it reaches the help centre.
