No Nigerian HBO Max has ever existed, and not one African country is on HBO Max’s list. The change that actually affected Nigerian viewers in 2026 was about something else: which package you have to be on.
HBO Max has never operated in Nigeria, and nothing has been announced. No Nigerian service carries the HBO premium library either. What did change is that Showmax closed on 30 April 2026 and its Originals moved into DStv Stream — available, in MultiChoice’s own words, on the Compact and Premium packages. Compact is ₦19,000 a month. The two cheapest DStv tiers reach none of it.

The Nigerian story in 2026 is not about price rising. It is about who is on the right side of a line.
Showmax was a standalone subscription: anyone could buy it on its own. When it closed on 30 April 2026, its Originals — the Nollywood and pan-African slate, The Wife, Wura, Youngins and the rest — moved into a section of DStv Stream. MultiChoice’s own Nigerian announcement is precise about who reaches them:
“Showmax Originals and more will be available to DStv Compact and DStv Premium satellite and streaming-only customers via the DStv Stream app.” — DStv Nigeria — Showmax Originals move to DStv Stream
Set that against what the packages cost:
DStv Nigeria, from MultiChoice’s own package and comparison pages
| DStv Nigeria package | Price per month | Reaches the Showmax library? |
|---|---|---|
| Padi | ₦4,400 | No — and Padi is not sold as a streaming-only package |
| Yanga | ₦6,000 | No |
| Confam | ₦11,000 | No |
| Compact | ₦19,000 | Yes |
| Compact Plus | ₦30,000 | MultiChoice does not say — see below |
| Premium | ₦44,500 | Yes |
The gap is the story. A viewer on Padi pays ₦4,400 a month and gets none of the library that was, until April, available to anyone who wanted to buy it separately. Reaching it means moving to Compact at ₦19,000 — more than four times the entry package. A library commissioned for the widest possible Nigerian audience now sits behind one of the more expensive tiers in the market.
One thing this page will not tell you, because MultiChoice does not: whether Compact Plus is included. The announcement names Compact and Premium and says nothing about the tier sitting between them. If that is your package, ask rather than assume.
As for HBO itself — it is not in any of these boxes. A last-minute arrangement at the start of 2026 kept twelve Warner Bros. Discovery channels on DStv and GOtv across roughly fifty African markets, Nigeria among them, but those are documentary, news and children’s channels. The HBO premium library is not sold in Nigeria by anybody.

HBO Max publishes its own country list. Nigeria is Africa’s largest entertainment market by output, and it is not on it — because no African country is.
HBO Max’s own availability list, read on 24 September 2026
| Market | On HBO Max’s list? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| United States and its territories | Yes | The U.S. library, U.S. release dates and the live-sports slate |
| Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal | Yes | All on the Asia-Pacific list |
| India | Yes, since 15 April 2026 | As a hub inside JioHotstar, from around 49 rupees a month |
| Latin America and the Caribbean | Yes | Effectively all of it |
| Nigeria, and every other African country | No | Not one appears anywhere on the list |
Nigeria produces more feature films a year than almost anywhere on earth and exports them across the continent. It has a young, largely English-speaking, heavily mobile audience. On the usual measures of where a streaming service goes next, it is a conspicuous candidate.
It is also worth knowing how these launches have actually happened. India got HBO Max in April 2026 and Japan gets it on 1 October 2026 — in both cases as a hub inside a service that was already there, not as a standalone app, and in India’s case at a price of around fifty rupees a month. That shape would suit a market like Nigeria. Nobody has announced it, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

What the American service costs, and what Nigeria cannot buy at any price from anybody.
Prices checked against HBO Max’s own plan page on 24 September 2026. They are the same everywhere in the United States.
US HBO Max, from HBO Max’s own plan page
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Streams | Quality | Downloads | Live sports |

| Standard | $18.49 | $184.99 | 2 | 1080p | 30 | Yes |
| Premium | $22.99 | $229.99 | 4 (2 for sports) | 4K, Dolby Atmos where available | 100 | Yes |
“Prices don’t include applicable taxes.” — HBO Max Help — plans and prices
“Live Sports on HBO Max is included with the Standard and Premium plans.” — HBO Max Help — sports
That sports line is the part that does not travel and the part most people are actually after. In HBO Max’s own words:
“With Sports on HBO Max, you can stream live games, matches, and events in 2026, including: MLB, NASCAR, NCAA Big 12 and Big East, NCAA College Football Playoffs, NCAA March Madness®, NHL, Roland-Garros, T100, Unrivaled, WEC, Cycling, Players Era Festival, U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Soccer Team matches, and The Match.” — HBO Max Help — sports on HBO Max
None of that is sold in Nigeria by anyone, at any price. It is a United States product with United States rights behind it.

These are HBO Max’s rules, not this site’s reading of them, and they apply to every subscriber wherever they are.
“If you travel to a country or region where HBO Max is not available, you won’t be able to stream.” — HBO Max Help — where HBO Max is available
“HBO Max is currently available in these countries and regions:” — HBO Max Help — the availability list itself
Two things follow that are worth separating. A subscription does not stop existing when you cross a border — billing, plan and profiles carry on. What changes is what the app will play, and in a country HBO Max does not serve, the answer is nothing.
The availability list is also the thing to check rather than trust second-hand. It is edited as markets launch, and it has lagged: Japan is getting HBO Max on 1 October 2026 inside Prime Video and Hulu, which is the kind of change that reaches the press before it reaches the help centre.

One layer of the stack, described plainly, with the other layers left where they are.
USip sells the network part and nothing else. Every HBO Max rule above still applies in full.
Two Nigerian practicalities are worth separating from anything to do with a network address. Which DStv tier you are on is a billing decision, and whether a payment method works for a foreign subscription is a banking one. Neither is changed by where an address appears to be.

Each one is quick, and each one can save a subscription you would have had to cancel.
Padi and Yanga do not reach the migrated Showmax library, and Padi is not offered as a streaming-only package at all. If you are on either, nothing you do in the app will open it.
MultiChoice names Compact and Premium and is silent about the tier between them. Silence is not inclusion.
The twelve channels retained on DStv and GOtv are documentary, news and children’s channels. The HBO premium library is not among them.
Connect the residential U.S. address first, open a private desktop window, and play one ordinary on-demand title. One result, one variable.

A residential U.S. IP address. It is the network layer only — the HBO Max subscription is separate and is not included.
No. HBO Max publishes the list of countries and regions it serves, and Nigeria is not on it. Nothing has been announced either.
No — it was never there. There has been no Nigerian HBO Max to withdraw. That matters because “bring it back” campaigns are arguing for something that never existed.
Yes, and it is worth knowing because it shows how these launches happen. HBO Max reached India on 15 April 2026, and reaches Japan on 1 October 2026 — in both cases not as its own app, but as a hub inside an existing service (JioHotstar; Prime Video and Hulu Japan). Neither market appeared on HBO Max’s own availability page for months afterwards, which is why this page treats that page as a starting point rather than the last word.
No, and this is the error nearly every page on the subject makes. HBO Max passed 100 markets in October 2025 and its own list runs to roughly 140 countries and territories. It is simply not sold in Nigeria.
Warner Bros. Discovery. Paramount Skydance agreed to buy it, and that deal had not closed as of 22 September 2026 — Netflix, which was reported as a bidder, withdrew. Nobody has said what any of it means for licences outside the United States, so this page does not guess.
This page will not tell you that, because nobody outside HBO Max can. A residential U.S. IP changes one layer — the address a service reads. Your account country, your plan, the catalogue licence and the app store all sit above it and are untouched.
No. Showmax was a standalone subscription anyone could buy on its own. DStv Stream is the app that comes with a DStv package, and the Originals now sit in a section inside it — reachable, per MultiChoice, on Compact and Premium. On a cheaper package the app will not open that library at all.
No Nigerian service carries the HBO premium library. The Warner Bros. Discovery channels that remain on DStv and GOtv are documentary, news and children’s channels.
It closed on 30 April 2026. Its Originals moved into a Showmax section inside DStv Stream, which MultiChoice says is available to DStv Compact and DStv Premium customers.
No. MultiChoice names Compact and Premium only. Compact is ₦19,000 a month against ₦4,400 for Padi, and Padi is not sold as a streaming-only package.
MultiChoice does not say. Its announcement names Compact and Premium and skips Compact Plus, and this guide will not fill that gap by guessing. Ask MultiChoice before you upgrade on that basis.

Availability, prices and catalogues all move. Every factual claim on this page links to the page it came from.
HBO Max is a third-party service and is not affiliated with USip. HBO Max controls account eligibility, prices, catalogues, supported devices and content rights, and all of them change.
Confirm what your account is actually entitled to. Connect the residential U.S. address before you open HBO Max. Use a clean browser session. Then play one ordinary on-demand title your plan includes — not the newest thing, not a live game. That single result tells you more than an evening of retrying will.
