ESPN in Germany: The Sport Is Here, ESPN Is Not

Germany is the market where the answer is least about blocking and most about who holds the rights. The American sport a German reader wants is already sold here — by German services, none of which is ESPN.

Short answer

ESPN is not sold in Germany, and the leagues have not waited for it. The NFL’s own German page names RTL and NITRO as the free-to-air home, DAZN for the Sunday conference broadcast and the Thursday, Sunday and Monday night games, and NFL Game Pass running through DAZN. ESPN is not on that page at all. A residential US IP is worth considering only if the specific thing you want sits on the American ESPN and on none of the German routes.

Who actually holds it

The NFL’s Own German Page Does Not Mention ESPN

This is the cleanest available evidence, because it comes from the league rather than from a broadcaster marketing itself.

Free to air

RTL and NITRO

The NFL’s German page: “RTL und NITRO sind die exklusive Free-TV-Heimat der National Football League in Deutschland.” At least two live games on Sunday primetime, plus one more each week on RTL+.

Subscription

DAZN

“Mit DAZN bekommst du jeden Sonntag ab 19 Uhr die deutsche NFL-Konferenz.” Two exclusive Sunday evening games, plus Thursday, Sunday and Monday Night Football.

Through DAZN

NFL Game Pass

DAZN carries Game Pass in Germany, covering preseason, regular season and postseason.

Not named

ESPN

ESPN does not appear anywhere on the NFL’s German page. There is no German ESPN tier and no German ESPN channel.

That is worth sitting with before you buy anything. If your reason for wanting ESPN is the NFL, Germany already sells it — some of it free — and the American service is not the shortest route to it.

One moving part to be aware of: the NFL ended its DAZN Germany pay-TV contract early in 2026. Arrangements in this market are actively changing, so check the league’s own page for the current season rather than trusting any guide, including this one, on the detail.

When a US IP is the right tool

It is the right tool in one case: the specific event you want is carried by the American ESPN and by none of RTL, NITRO or DAZN. That happens — college sport and much of ESPN’s studio output have no German home at all — but it is a narrower case than most guides suggest.

It is the wrong tool if the event is a German NFL broadcast. Those rights are German, and the American ESPN does not carry them.

Why there is no German tier

ESPN Sells in America, and Only There

Germany has no ESPN subscription to compare against, which makes the agreement unusually simple to read here.

“The ESPN and Hulu Services are only available in the United States and certain of its territories.”

Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu Subscriber Agreement, effective 5 February 2026

There is no German exception hiding behind that sentence and no European tier that the page has not found. ESPN sells one direct product and it sells it in the United States.

The travel clause is about Disney+ rather than ESPN, which matters if you hold a Disney+ subscription in Germany:

“This Agreement applies if you purchase a subscription to the Disney+ Service in the U.S. and any supported U.S. territories and use it in other geographic locations where the Disney+ Service is made available.”

Same agreement, effective 5 February 2026

That clause is also why EU portability does not help here. Portability lets you carry a subscription you already hold across the EU; it cannot create access to a service that is not sold in the EU at all.

What you would pay, and what Germany already gives you

American Prices, Against German Alternatives

Read these next to what RTL, NITRO and DAZN already offer, not in isolation. Some of the German coverage is free to air.

ESPN+ library

ESPN Select

$13.99

$139.99 per year

  • The library formerly sold as ESPN+
  • 30 for 30, originals, replays and highlights
  • Does not by itself include every ESPN linear network
  • Event blackouts and league rules still apply

These are ESPN’s standalone US prices, checked 20 September 2026. They rose on 17 September 2026; subscribers from before 20 August 2026 keep the old price until their first billing date after that.

For the NFL specifically, Germany is unusually well served, and paying an American subscription to reach a game that RTL is broadcasting free is a real and avoidable mistake.

What the connection touches

What a US IP Changes for a German Viewer

Germany’s answer depends almost entirely on which sport you want, because the NFL is comprehensively licensed here and college sport is not licensed at all.

It can help with

  • Reaching American ESPN content that has no German rights holder
  • Presenting one stable US address for the length of a session
  • Telling a location refusal apart from an entitlement refusal
  • Resolving it in a browser before you reconfigure anything else

It cannot change

  • Reaching RTL, NITRO or DAZN rights, which are German
  • Making the American service carry a German NFL broadcast
  • Turning a German card and address into American ones
  • Creating EU portability rights for a service not sold in the EU
Check the German routes first

Rule Out the German Broadcasters, Then Test

The efficient order in Germany is to eliminate the local routes before paying for a foreign one.

01

Check whether RTL or NITRO is showing it

They are the NFL’s free-to-air home in Germany. If your game is there, the cheapest correct answer costs nothing.

02

Check DAZN, including Game Pass

DAZN carries the German conference broadcast plus Thursday, Sunday and Monday night games, and runs NFL Game Pass in Germany.

03

Connect a residential US IP and verify it resolves

Only once both German routes are ruled out. Confirm the address reads as United States before loading the American service.

04

Load ESPN and read the exact refusal

A location message, an account message and a blackout notice are different answers. Blackouts in particular are league rules, not network ones.

Where each device decides

Devices, With German Apps Already Installed

Most German readers arrive with RTL+ or DAZN already on the device. Those apps are not competing with ESPN for the same credentials, but they do carry a lot of the same sport.

Windows logo

Windows

Best for comparing German and American routes in adjacent tabs.

  • Check RTL+ or DAZN listings before connecting anything
  • Connect the US IP before loading the American service
  • Confirm the resolved address before signing in
macOS logo

Mac

Same comparison, same order of operations.

  • German route in one tab, American in another
  • Safari and Chrome can differ at playback
  • Leave the television until the browser answers
iOS logo

iPhone and iPad

A German Apple Account carries RTL+ and DAZN; the American ESPN app is a separate question.

  • Apple Account country is not set by your connection
  • German apps work without any US IP at all
  • Test in Safari before blaming the store
Android logo

Android

Google Play country follows payment history rather than your connection.

  • Play country does not follow your IP address
  • The web player is the honest test
  • Clear app data before re-testing a failed sign-in

If DAZN plays and ESPN does not, that is a rights difference rather than a network fault.

These four walkthroughs were recorded in October 2022 and show the American ESPN+ signup flow, now sold as ESPN Select. They do not cover the German services.

Questions people actually ask

ESPN in Germany: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I watch ESPN in Germany with a US IP address?

You can reach the American ESPN service. But check RTL, NITRO and DAZN first — for the NFL in particular, Germany already sells the coverage, and some of it is free to air.

Is ESPN+ still a product?

No. ESPN+ was renamed ESPN Select, with ESPN Unlimited above it. German guides written before the rename, and the four videos on this page, still use the old name.

Does ESPN permit using a VPN?

The agreement is linked in full below and quoted selectively here. The more useful German question is usually whether a German broadcaster already holds what you want.

Is ESPN available in Germany?

No. There is no German ESPN channel and no German ESPN subscription tier. The NFL’s own German page lists RTL, NITRO and DAZN, and does not mention ESPN.

If I want the NFL, do I need a US IP at all?

Often not. RTL and NITRO are the free-to-air home of the NFL in Germany, and DAZN carries the German conference broadcast plus Thursday, Sunday and Monday night games. Check the German routes before paying for an American one.

What is not available in Germany?

College sport and much of ESPN’s studio and original output have no German rights holder. That is the case where the American service is genuinely the only route.

Does EU portability help here?

Portability lets you take a subscription you already hold in one EU country with you to another. It does not create access to a service that is not sold in the EU at all, which is the situation with the American ESPN.
