What happened to the old ESPN channels and ESPN Player?
The old channels and ESPN Player have their own history. Current UK access also includes newer distribution, so use the local comparison above rather than treating the 2023 closure as the whole answer.

ESPN Classic and ESPN America cease transmission at midnight.
18 August 2023
ESPN Player shuts down. That particular service cannot be restored with a VPN; current local ESPN programming is offered through other routes.
A service that has been switched off cannot be reached from any IP address, British or American. If a guide tells you a VPN will restore ESPN Player, it is describing a service that closed three years ago.
What a US IP can reach is the American ESPN service — ESPN Select or ESPN Unlimited — which is a different product with different content and its own account requirements.
Historical distribution and current listings
Sky Sports
Took ESPN programming at roughly three games per week per sport during the regular season.
DAZN
Signed a multi-year deal for ESPN-broadcast games, at a substantially higher volume than the Sky arrangement.
TNT Sports
BT Sport became TNT Sports in 2023. The channel that carried the ESPN name until 2015 lives on under a different brand.
The same fixture can have different broadcasters in Britain and America. Check both listings: a local option may meet your needs, while the U.S. ESPN listing determines whether an American plan includes that event.
The clause that explains the 2013 sale
U.S. ESPN account rules and UK distribution
The subscriber agreement below describes the U.S. ESPN service. It should not be read as saying that ESPN-branded programming is unavailable through UK distributors.
“The ESPN and Hulu Services are only available in the United States and certain of its territories.”

These territory rules apply to the U.S. service described in that agreement. Selected ESPN programming on UK Disney+ and other local services has its own distribution and account arrangements.
The agreement’s travel clause is about Disney+ rather than ESPN, and the distinction is worth noticing:
“This Agreement applies if you purchase a subscription to the Disney+ Service in the U.S. and any supported U.S. territories and use it in other geographic locations where the Disney+ Service is made available.”

A Disney+ travel provision does not automatically grant access to U.S. ESPN. Check the terms for your own account market and service; local ESPN programming and American Select or Unlimited are separate offers.

Decide whether you want American ESPN at all
Find the fixture on the UK and U.S. schedules. Confirm the required account, plan and channel in each market before choosing which service to test.

Open a clean browser session
Use a supported browser or app and your own eligible account. A private browser session can help compare stored state. Installing an app does not establish subscription entitlement or guarantee successful playback.

Connect the residential US IP, then verify it resolves
Confirm the address reads as United States before you load anything. Checking only after a failure leaves you guessing which layer refused you.

Load ESPN and read the exact refusal
Record the exact message and whether it appears at sign-in or playback. Region, subscription and blackout messages suggest different checks, but do not prove that every other requirement has been met.

Devices, and the UK App Store Problem
British app stores carry the ESPN app. That is the part that misleads people: installing it is easy, and installing it proves nothing.
Windows
The honest first test, because the browser has no store in front of it.

Same order of operations; Safari and Chrome can behave differently at playback.

App availability, Apple Account country, ESPN entitlement and network setup are separate checks. Installing the app does not establish that the account includes the intended event.

ESPN in the UK: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I watch ESPN in the UK with a US IP address?
You can reach the American ESPN service, which is what a US IP is for. You cannot reach a British ESPN service, because there is not one. Whether the American service then plays depends on your account, your payment method and the blackout status of the specific event.
Is ESPN+ still a product?
ESPN+ content remains available through ESPN Select and is also included in Unlimited. Select and Unlimited have different channel entitlements, so check the event and plan rather than choosing by the older ESPN+ name alone.
Does ESPN permit using a VPN?
The agreement is linked in full in the sources below. This page quotes it selectively and does not paraphrase what it permits; the clauses that matter are the ones covering your own account.
Will a VPN bring back ESPN Player?
No. ESPN Player closed on 18 August 2023. It is not geo-blocked from the UK; it does not exist anywhere. No network route reaches a service that has been switched off.
Is the ESPN channel on Sky the same as American ESPN?
No. ESPN’s UK channels were sold to BT in 2013 and rebranded; what Sky carried from November 2023 was ESPN programming under a supply arrangement, not the American ESPN service.
Where are the games now?
Check the current UK event listings. Selected ESPN programming is available on UK Disney+, and DAZN offers market-dependent college-sports coverage. Availability varies by fixture and plan; an old broadcaster arrangement is not a complete current schedule.
Does the UK have a Disney bundle with ESPN in it?
Disney announced ESPN's expansion on Disney+ across Europe in April 2026. Check the UK ESPN area and event listings. This market-specific offering does not automatically activate U.S. ESPN Select or Unlimited.
