Paramount+ in Japan

What changed. Where the shows remain. Which account to use.

Paramount+ ended its branded service in Japan in March 2026, but that does not mean every Paramount film and series disappeared. Start with the exact title and season on J:COM STREAM and WOWOW—not with a U.S. subscription or a VPN.

Start with the local service and the exact subscription you need. Streaming access and the USA-IP connection are separate purchases.

Can you still watch Paramount shows in Japan?

Yes, selected Paramount programs continue through Japanese services. J:COM announced that its Paramount+ service would end in March 2026 while films and series would remain on J:COM STREAM from April. Its notice directs viewers to the Paramount brand section. WOWOW also announced continued distribution of selected Paramount programming after the closure. These are local licensed offerings, not promises of the complete U.S. Paramount+ catalog. If an old guide tells you simply to register for Paramount+ Japan, check its date. The useful question now is: Which Japanese service has my season, in the language I need, under my current plan?

Do not cancel a working Japanese subscription just because the Paramount+ label has changed. First check whether the programs you use it for are still available. Conversely, a Paramount logo does not establish that every season is included.

Check the season—not just the series name

WOWOW’s continuation notice names programs such as Matlock, Elsbeth, Landman and several Star Trek series, with season ranges. Treat that announcement as a starting point, not a perpetual availability guarantee: the notice itself warns that programming can change. Read the current continuation list.

  1. Search both the English and Japanese title. Try the localized title if an English search returns nothing.
  2. Open the season selector. Finding Season 1 does not answer whether the season you want is available.
  3. Count the episodes you intend to watch. A series landing page can coexist with a partial season or a limited viewing window.
  4. Check audio and subtitles on the episode. Do not infer English subtitles, Japanese dubbing or the same language options across every season.
  5. Read the entitlement label. Included streaming, a rental and a purchase are different offers.

For example, a viewer continuing a show from another country should record the last episode watched, then compare that exact episode with the Japanese listing. This avoids paying for a service that only has earlier seasons.

Japanese prices and billing traps to avoid

J:COM’s public service page lists J:COM STREAM at ¥1,100 per month including tax. It also separates application routes for existing and new J:COM customers. Check your existing contract before treating the headline price as an additional charge: a bundle and a standalone application are not automatically equivalent. J:COM service and application details.

WOWOW’s published direct Standard price is ¥2,530 per month including tax, with one concurrent On Demand stream. Its billing guide lists ¥2,790 for Apple App Store subscriptions; this is a useful reason to compare the sign-up route rather than assuming the app price is universal. Larger household plans also exist. WOWOW prices and billing.

For newcomers to Japan, payment eligibility matters separately from internet location. WOWOW’s direct sign-up instructions say overseas-issued credit cards cannot be used when choosing card payment. A U.S. IP address does not fix that restriction. Use the payment options genuinely available to you and ask the provider about your circumstances before subscribing. WOWOW sign-up requirements.

If a Japanese service will not play

Separate an account problem from a network problem. First check the subscription receipt, the account signed into the app, and whether your selected episode is included. If television viewing is essential, verify the specific TV or streaming-device model before paying; a mobile app working does not establish TV compatibility.

WOWOW identifies errors L-2054 and L-2055 with unsupported networks, including overseas, VPN or proxy connections. It recommends testing mobile data when a home Wi-Fi connection is incorrectly detected. Therefore, if you are in Japan and trying to use WOWOW, adding a U.S. VPN connection is the wrong troubleshooting direction. Official network-error guidance.

Keep a short diagnostic note: device model, app version, exact error, episode, time and whether the problem also occurs on another normal Japanese connection. Give that information to the relevant provider; it is more useful than repeatedly purchasing different subscriptions.

Where USA-IP fits—and where it does not

USA-IP provides a U.S. residential IP connection; it is not J:COM, WOWOW or Paramount+, and it does not sell their programming. Consider the connection service only after identifying a separate U.S.-service requirement and checking the provider’s account, payment and location rules.

U.S. and non-U.S. Paramount subscriptions have different territorial restrictions. A Japanese partner login should not be treated as a U.S. subscription. Check Paramount’s travel policy.

No playback guarantee: a changed IP does not supply a subscription, restore a removed season, create Japanese subtitles or guarantee that a provider will accept the connection. Provider restrictions can still apply. USA-IP pricing below is for the connection service only, separate from any streaming bill.

Japan: frequently asked questions

Did Paramount+ close in Japan?

The branded service ended in March 2026. J:COM and WOWOW announced continued distribution of selected Paramount content; that is different from a continuing standalone U.S.-style subscription.

Do I need to subscribe again if I already have WOWOW?

Check the program in your existing account first. Do not buy another plan until you know whether the required season is included and your WEB account is correctly linked.

Will every Paramount show have Japanese subtitles?

Do not assume so. Check language options for the particular episode on the Japanese provider’s page. Neither a studio logo nor a U.S. IP proves subtitle availability.

Can I use WOWOW outside Japan?

WOWOW says its broadcast and On Demand services are limited to Japan. Check its own rules before travelling; this guide does not promise cross-border access. WOWOW territory policy.

Which service is cheapest for one show?

Compare the exact included season and the subscription route, not just the monthly headline. An inexpensive service without your episode is not a substitute, and an existing subscription may already cover your need.
