How to Watch Philo Outside the US

Short answer: Philo works only from inside the United States. Its help centre says so in one line — “Philo is only available when accessed from inside the US or its territories.” — and that line covers everything Philo offers: the free channels, the Essential plan and Bundle+.

Two things about that are often got the wrong way round. Philo’s free channels need no subscription and no account — “No sign-up needed”, in Philo’s words. And Philo’s subscription plans can only be started from inside the U.S. So for anyone abroad, the location is not something that helps once a subscription exists: it comes first, for the free channels and the plans alike.

USip supplies that one part — a residential U.S. IP address, the kind of connection an ordinary American home has. It is not a Philo account, a plan or a channel licence, and Philo can refuse any address. Below: Philo’s three tiers and prices, its rules in its own words, a ten-minute test that starts with a free channel, each device, U.S. prime time on foreign clocks, and guides for eight countries.

Philo’s free channels need no subscription and no account

Philo runs a free tier underneath its subscription plans: more than 150 ad-supported channels, which Philo describes in plain terms — “No sign-up needed”, and, asked whether an account is needed, “No, you can start watching instantly without an account.” The one condition is the condition Philo applies to everything it offers: the request has to come from inside the U.S. or its territories.

Free channels

More than 150 channels, free with ads

Philo’s own pages print the number as 150+ and 160+ in different places, so we say “more than 150”. They include channels built around shows such as Tiny House Nation, Love and Hip Hop and The Walking Dead Universe, and in July 2026 Philo added six more, among them a Miramax movie channel and two BET x Tyler Perry channels.

A free account, if you want one

Optional — it adds a DVR and a watch history

Philo says “creating a free account lets you save shows, favorite a channel, and keep track of your watch history.” With an account, free channels come with a “30-day DVR (on select titles)”, and Philo’s account rules apply: “Create up to ten profiles per account.”

Where they work

Inside the U.S. and its territories only

Free does not mean worldwide. The free channels sit behind the same rule as the subscription plans, so from Dublin, Zurich or Sydney a free channel is as unavailable as one in a plan. No account and no plan changes that — only the location Philo reads does.

This is why the free channels make the best first test from abroad: there is no account and no plan in the way. If a free channel plays, the location part is working; if it does not, nothing else is to blame yet.

What Philo sells in 2026: Free, Essential and Bundle+

Philo reorganised its plans on 10 March 2026: a new Essential plan, and Bundle+ — formerly Philo Core — with three partner services added. The free tier sits underneath both. Prices are Philo’s U.S. prices as its pricing page showed them on 6 October 2026.

Philo’s own description of Bundle+ is “Everything in Essential, plus AMC+, as well as access to HBO Max (Basic with Ads), and discovery+ apps”. Those three are separate apps that Philo’s plan unlocks access to — each still runs under its own rules about where it can be watched, and several of them are sold outside the U.S. under local terms.

Essential and Bundle+ can add extras, each with a seven-day trial, at Philo’s prices: STARZ (US$12 a month), HBO Max Standard (US$13), Hallmark+ (US$8.99), MGM+ (US$8), discovery+ without ads (US$8), ALLBLK (US$7), AMC+ without ads (US$4) and Movies & More (US$3).

One line in this table carries a place of its own. The trial, Philo’s terms say, works like this: “A Trial Offer is offered to new Philo subscribers only in the 50 United States (and its territories).” The terms were last updated on 3 August 2026.

Philo’s rules about location, in its own words

Philo is brief and clear about where it works. Here is all of it, quoted rather than summarised, including the parts that argue against what USip sells.

The help centre

Inside the U.S. and its territories

“Philo is only available when accessed from inside the US or its territories.” And: “If you attempt to sign in to Philo from anywhere else in the world, you’ll see an error message and be prevented from watching Philo.” The page the error links to is titled “Philo is only available in the US”.

The terms

Last updated 3 August 2026

Philo licenses its service for use “solely in the United States of America and its territories and commonwealths.” The terms also ask users not to “circumvent any security, encryption, authentication, digital rights management, or technical features intended to prevent unauthorized use of our Services.” They do not mention VPNs or location by name.

Philo’s own fix

What Philo tells people who see the error

Its first troubleshooting step is “If you are using a VPN on your device, disconnect from it and try again” — followed by “if you don’t know what a VPN is, you probably aren’t using one.” It is written for people inside the U.S. whose VPN made them look foreign, and it says plainly how Philo regards VPNs.

Put plainly: Philo is an American service, licensed for use in America. Nothing sold outside the U.S. turns into a Philo account, and Philo’s help centre tells anyone on a VPN to switch it off. This page is written for Americans living, studying or working abroad who already know Philo, and for people who miss one American network that no local channel carries.

We print the licence clause next to what a residential U.S. IP does on purpose. A residential address changes the location Philo reads; Philo’s terms license the service for use in the U.S. only. Read both and decide with them in front of you — we would rather say this than sell around it.

One layer of four

What a residential U.S. IP changes for Philo — and what it cannot

Whether a channel plays depends on four things: where the request comes from, the account, the plan and the channel’s rights. A connection can change the first of them and nothing else.

ConnectionHow Philo sees itLimitUse
Your home line abroadAn address in your own countryRefused — the free channels includedThe baseline
Free VPNA small pool of server addresses shared by very many peopleCrowded, easy to recognise, a different result from one hour to the nextNo use for a test you want to read
Data-centre VPNA U.S. hosting company’s address rangeThe country can be right while the address is plainly not a homeGeneral browsing
USip residential U.S. IPAn ordinary consumer address on a U.S. ISPChanges the location only — account, plan and rights stay as they areOne stable U.S. identity to test against

What a residential U.S. IP changes

  • The address Philo reads — a U.S. household address instead of a foreign one
  • Consistency — one U.S. identity from the free channels through sign-in to playback
  • Diagnosis — it separates “Philo thinks I am abroad” from “my plan does not include this”

If a free channel plays in a clean browser window, the location part is done.

What it cannot change

  • Whether you have a Philo account, or which plan it is on
  • Your Apple Account or Google Play country, which decides whether the Philo app installs
  • The rights to a channel, a show or a partner app such as HBO Max
  • Philo’s rules, or its ability to refuse any address

Do not keep changing addresses to fix an account, plan or rights problem. If the free-channel test passes, the network is not the problem.

Ten minutes, one layer at a time

How to test Philo from outside the US, step by step

A result you can read is worth more than five you cannot. Start with the free channels — no account, no plan — so the first answer is about the location alone.

1

Connect on a laptop, then check both address lines

Bring the USip connection up on a Windows PC or a Mac — a laptop browser is the one place where you can see the address, the cookies and the result side by side. An IP checker should say United States for IPv4. If it also shows an IPv6 address from your own provider, that route still leads home: switch IPv6 off on the device for the test, then check again.

2

Open a free channel in a private window

Open philo.com in a private window — Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome and Edge, Ctrl+Shift+P in Firefox, Shift+Command+N in Safari — and start one of the free channels. Philo says they need no sign-up, so nothing about an account can get in the way: if a free channel plays for a full minute, the location part works.

3

Then sign in and play one channel from your plan

If you have a Philo account, sign in using the same window and play one live channel your plan includes. If the free channel played and this one does not, the difference lies in the account or the plan — not in the address, which you have just seen working.

4

Write down any message word for word

If anything refuses, copy the wording before you change a thing. “Philo is only available in the US” is Philo’s location message. An app that the App Store or Google Play will not offer points at the store account’s country. A channel missing from the guide points at the plan. Three different problems, three different fixes — and only one of them is about the address.

If a free channel plays and one channel from your plan does not, the location part is working, and the answer lies in the account, the plan or that channel’s rights.

Laptop first, television last

Setting Philo up on each device from outside the US

Philo runs in a browser on Windows and macOS, in apps on Android and iPhone, and on most television platforms. Start with a laptop and nothing else until it works; phones add an app store, and a television adds a different kind of setup. The four videos were recorded in April 2023, before Philo’s current plans: the connection steps still apply, while Philo’s own screens and plan names have changed since.

Windows
Windows

Philo on Windows: the cleanest place to start

Philo supports Windows 10 and 11 in a supported browser, with no app and no app store involved — which is exactly why Windows comes first. The only moving parts are the connection, the public address and the browser’s cookies. Import the USip profile into OpenVPN Connect, connect, check both address lines, then open philo.com in a private window so no earlier decision about your location is sitting in a cookie.

Step by step: the Windows setup guide.

macOS
macOS

Philo on macOS, and two settings that route around you

Philo supports Macs running Ventura or later in a supported browser. Two settings can send traffic past the connection you just brought up: iCloud Private Relay, where Apple offers it, and IPv6 on your home network. Switch Private Relay off for the test and check that no IPv6 address from your own provider is showing. If Chrome plays and Safari refuses, one of those two is usually why.

Step by step: the Mac setup guide.

Android
Android

Philo on Android: the Google account decides what Play shows

Philo’s Android app needs Android 7.0 or later, and Google Play offers apps by the Google account’s country, not by the address you are connected through. Changing that country has consequences for everything else on the account, so make it a decision of its own, never a step in the middle of a test. Exempt OpenVPN Connect from battery optimisation as well: a tunnel Android closes to save power looks exactly like a refusal from Philo.

Step by step: the Android setup guide.

iPhone and iPad
iPhone and iPad

Philo on iPhone and iPad: the Apple Account’s country

Philo’s iOS app needs iOS 18.0 or later, and Apple offers apps by the Apple Account’s country, not by the network. Changing the country affects subscriptions, Family Sharing and anything bought on the account, and Apple sets its own conditions for it — follow them, never with invented details. Once the app is installed, confirm the address in Safari first, then open Philo.

Step by step: the iOS setup guide.

A television, streaming stick or console cannot run the OpenVPN Connect app, so USip sets it up another way: with Smart DNS, entered in the device’s own network settings or once on the router. Smart DNS recognises your home by its public IP address, which you register with USip first — and register again if your provider changes it. Step by step: the Smart DNS guide. Leave the television for last, after a laptop has played a free channel.

One residential U.S. IP — an ordinary consumer address on a U.S. ISP, not a server range. USip and Philo are separate services: the plans include the connection only — not a Philo account, a Philo plan or add-on, an app-store region or the rights to any channel.

Live television keeps American hours

U.S. prime time on foreign clocks, and what Philo’s DVR changes

The channels in Philo’s plans are live American networks, so an 8 p.m. show starts at 8 p.m. in New York — not in Oslo or Sydney. Philo’s DVR is what makes that workable: Essential and Bundle+ include a “1-year unlimited DVR”, free accounts a “30-day DVR (on select titles)”.

These are the times in October 2026, from the IANA time-zone database. The clocks move at different moments: Europe leaves summer time on 25 October 2026 and the U.S. on 1 November, so for that one week the European times above are an hour earlier. From 1 November the European times are back to those in the table, while Singapore and Perth move to 9 a.m., Brisbane to 11 a.m. and Sydney to noon.

So the realistic way to watch an American evening from Europe is the next evening, from the recording, and from Asia or Australia the same morning or afternoon. Live matters only for things that cannot wait — an awards night, a finale everyone is talking about.

A recording changes the question from “when does it air?” to “has it recorded?”. Set the recordings once, from the U.S. connection, and the hours stop mattering.

Read the failure before you change the setup

When Philo refuses: what each message usually means

Most problems from abroad fall into a few patterns, and the message tells you which layer to look at. Change one thing, then repeat the same test.

1

“Philo is only available in the US”

Philo’s location message. Check the address first: the checker should say United States for IPv4 and show no IPv6 address from your own provider. Then close every Philo tab, open a fresh private window and try once more.

2

A free channel plays, a plan channel does not

The location is fine. Look at the account instead: is it signed in, is the plan active, and does that plan include the network? Philo’s guide shows what the plan carries.

3

The app is missing from the store

App stores offer apps by the store account’s country, not by your address. That is an Apple or Google account question, and changing the country has consequences of its own.

4

It plays on the laptop but not on the TV

A television cannot run OpenVPN Connect; it uses Smart DNS on the TV or the router, with your home’s public IP registered with USip. If your provider has changed that address, register it again.

5

A Bundle+ partner app behaves differently

HBO Max, AMC+ and discovery+ are separate apps with their own rules about countries. Philo’s plan gives access to them; how each one treats a connection from abroad is that service’s decision.

6

It worked yesterday and not today

Something changed in one layer — the address, a cookie, an app update or the plan. Run the free-channel test again before anything else: within a minute it tells you whether location is still the problem.

If the same message survives a clean retry, keep its exact wording. Philo’s support and USip’s support both need it, and it is the quickest route to an answer.

Eight country guides

Philo from Ireland, Switzerland, Singapore and five more countries

Each guide starts with what a viewer there already has — which of Philo’s networks reach local screens, and in what form — then U.S. prime time on local clocks, local connections and what we could confirm about local rules.

Ireland

Philo in Ireland

Discovery, TLC, ID, Sky History, MTV and Nickelodeon reach Irish homes on Sky and Virgin Media; ten of Philo’s popular networks do not. U.S. prime time arrives at 1 a.m.

Switzerland

Philo in Switzerland

Half of Philo’s headline networks reach Swiss screens as local channels, mostly in German. Swiss seven-day replay set against Philo’s DVR, with prime time at 2 a.m.

Singapore

Philo in Singapore

StarHub carries regional Discovery, HGTV, HISTORY, Lifetime and Nickelodeon channels. U.S. prime time lands at breakfast, so the DVR does most of the work.

Norway

Philo in Norway

Six of Philo’s networks are on Telia, RiksTV or Allente. IPv6 is switched on for most Norwegian lines, so the test starts by reading both address lines.

Denmark

Philo in Denmark

Six networks sit on YouSee and Norlys; the other twelve do not. And what happened to Denmark’s December 2025 VPN proposal, from the ministry’s own papers.

the Netherlands

Philo in the Netherlands

Seven of Philo’s headline channels have Dutch versions on KPN, Ziggo, Odido or DELTA — and why a Dutch TV app travels around Europe while Philo stays in the U.S.

Australia

Philo in Australia

A&E, History, Comedy Central and MTV’s channels have left Australian TV since 2024. U.S. prime time on five Australian clocks, and why the DVR matters there most.

Sweden

Philo in Sweden

Whether you already have TLC or Discovery depends on how your building gets TV — a Tele2 group agreement, Allente, or neither. Prime time at 2 a.m.

Philo is sold in none of these countries, and the same Philo rules apply in every one of them. What changes from guide to guide is what is already on local television, the clock and the connections.

What people ask before they try Philo from abroad

Philo outside the US — FAQ

Answered from Philo’s own pages wherever Philo has written the answer down — including the questions where the honest answer is that it depends on something no connection controls.

Can I watch Philo outside the US?

Not as a service that sells to you where you are. Philo’s help centre: “Philo is only available when accessed from inside the US or its territories.” What decides it is the location Philo reads — and, for the channels in a plan, a Philo account whose plan covers what you want. USip supplies a residential U.S. IP address, which changes the location. It is not a Philo account, and Philo can refuse any address.

Do I need a Philo subscription to watch the free channels?

No. Philo says “No sign-up needed”, and to the question of whether you need an account: “No, you can start watching instantly without an account.” What the free channels do need is the same thing the plan channels need — a request that comes from inside the U.S. or its territories.

Can I sign up for Philo from another country?

Philo’s rule covers sign-up as much as watching: “If you attempt to sign in to Philo from anywhere else in the world, you’ll see an error message and be prevented from watching Philo.” Its terms also say “A Trial Offer is offered to new Philo subscribers only in the 50 United States (and its territories).” So a Philo plan starts from inside the U.S., or from a connection Philo reads as one — which is why, for anyone abroad, the location comes before the subscription, not after it.

How much does Philo cost in 2026?

Essential is US$25 a month and Bundle+ US$33 a month, with the free channels below both — Philo’s U.S. prices since 10 March 2026, as its pricing page showed them on 6 October 2026. Philo does not sell plans in any other country, so there is no local price to compare them with.

Does Philo have a free trial?

Essential has a seven-day trial for new customers. Bundle+ has none: “No free trial is available for the Bundle+ package.” Philo’s terms add that “A Trial Offer is offered to new Philo subscribers only in the 50 United States (and its territories).”

What channels does Philo have?

More than 70 live networks on Essential and Bundle+. The ones Philo itself lists as popular are A&E, AMC, BET, Discovery Channel, Hallmark, HGTV, HISTORY, IFC, Investigation Discovery, Lifetime, LMN, MTV, Nickelodeon, OWN, TLC, TV One, VH1 and WE tv. The free tier adds more than 150 ad-supported channels. Philo’s line-up changes; its channel page is the authority.

Does Philo work with a VPN?

Philo’s own first answer to its location error is “If you are using a VPN on your device, disconnect from it and try again”. Server addresses are what streaming services recognise most easily, because many strangers share them. A residential U.S. IP is an ordinary home address instead — a different thing, but still a connection Philo can refuse, and no one can promise it will not.

Why does Philo say it’s only available in the US when I’m connected?

Usually one of three reasons. An IPv6 address from your own provider is still reaching Philo next to the U.S. IPv4 one; an earlier location decision is stored in a Philo cookie; or the address is the kind Philo distrusts. Check both address lines, open a fresh private window and try once more before changing anything else.

Is it legal to watch Philo from abroad?

Philo licenses its service for use “solely in the United States of America and its territories and commonwealths”, so watching from abroad is outside what its terms allow, whatever connection you use. Whether VPN tools themselves are allowed where you live is a separate question of local law — each country guide below says what we could and could not confirm for that country.

Can I watch Philo on my TV outside the US?

Philo has apps for Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, Samsung, LG and Vizio televisions. A television cannot run the OpenVPN Connect app, so USip sets TVs up with Smart DNS, on the TV or once on the router, after you register your home’s public IP address. Get a laptop result first.

Do HBO Max, AMC+ and discovery+ in Bundle+ work outside the US?

They are separate apps with rules of their own, and several of them are also sold outside the U.S. under local terms. Philo’s plan gives access to them; how each one treats a connection from abroad is that service’s decision, not Philo’s and not ours.

Can family in another country share my Philo account?

Philo’s terms tie profiles to one home: “Other members of your household living at the same address that are at least 18 years old may create profiles connected to your Account.” Within that home Philo allows ten profiles and three streams at once.

Does USip include a Philo subscription?

No. They are separate services. USip supplies the residential U.S. IP connection; the Philo account, the plan and the rights to every channel are Philo’s.

Ten minutes, one free channel, an answer you can use

The whole method fits in one attempt: connection up, both address lines checked, a private window on a laptop, one free channel for a full minute. Done in that order, it tells you whether the location part works before any account or plan is involved.

If it passes, the location is settled, and anything still missing lives in the account, the plan or a channel’s rights. If it fails, the exact message is the useful part — write it down before you change anything.

USip supplies the residential U.S. IP connection only. Philo accounts, plans and channel rights are Philo’s, and Philo can refuse any address.
