Star, for general entertainment
The Citizen reported before launch that Star would carry the latest from 20th Century Studios, Disney Television Studios, FX, Searchlight Pictures and others.
Short answer: Hulu is an American service, sold only in the United States, and there is no South African version. What South Africa does have is a Hulu tile inside Disney+ — the section called Star until 8 October 2025 — which carries a South African catalogue under the Hulu name.
2026 changed the rest of the local shelf: Showmax closed on 30 April, and most major HBO series left M-Net. If the title you want is on neither Disney+ nor DStv, and you hold a U.S. Hulu account from time in the States, two things must line up — a plan that includes the title and a connection Hulu reads as a U.S. household. USip provides the connection, and nothing on Hulu’s side of it.
Below: what the tile, the new ESPN channels and DStv Stream cover; how Telkom, Vodacom, MTN and Rain connections look to Hulu; why IPv6 is rarely the culprit in South Africa; a four-step test; and U.S. prime time on SAST.

A South African looking for an American show in 2026 faces a different shelf from a year earlier. Disney renamed its Star tile; Canal+ took control of MultiChoice, the company behind DStv, in September 2025; Showmax closed in April 2026. Search these before anything else.
| Service | What changed | What it means for an American show |
|---|---|---|
| Disney+ | Star tile renamed Hulu on 8 October 2025; two ESPN Africa channels added for Premium and Mobile plans from 2 October 2025 | The first place to search — legal, local and already set up |
| Showmax | Closed on 30 April 2026 after losses described as unsustainable; the Competition Commission said it would examine the closure against the merger conditions | Gone as a service, after launching in August 2015 |
| DStv Stream | A dedicated Showmax section with a selection of Showmax Originals, for DStv Compact and Premium customers, from 1 May 2026 | Local originals moved; the Hollywood catalogue was not confirmed to follow |
| M-Net on DStv | Lost virtually all major HBO and first-run Warner Bros. Discovery shows by late June 2026, after the old deal expired on 31 December 2025 | HBO’s big series are, for now, not a DStv answer |
| U.S. Hulu | Unchanged: sold in the United States only | Needs a U.S. account and a U.S. household connection |
Catalogues move title by title, and several of these changes are recent. The search box in each app is the only reliable check — not a list on a website, this one included.

Disney+ launched in South Africa on 18 May 2022, the first stop in Disney’s 2022 wave across Europe, the Middle East and Africa; North Africa and the Middle East followed on 8 June. It opened with a general-entertainment section called Star, and on 8 October 2025 Star became Hulu.
The Citizen reported before launch that Star would carry the latest from 20th Century Studios, Disney Television Studios, FX, Searchlight Pictures and others.
MyBroadband reported that the content would “remain the same as what’s available under the current Star brand”, with new titles labelled Hulu Original instead of Star Original.
DStv made Disney+ available to its customers on launch day, with the Explora Ultra decoder as the way in — the same South African Disney+ service as the app.
So the Hulu tile is Disney+’s South African catalogue under a new name. It is worth a search, and for some titles it will be the answer. What it is not is U.S. Hulu, whose library is licensed for the United States and sold only there.

Hulu publishes its territory rules plainly. Here they are in four groups, quoted exactly.
Hulu’s help centre: “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.” Among its sign-up requirements: “To be located within the U.S.”
A subscription “is intended for use by members of a single U.S. household.” The terms add: “Only residents of the countries and territories where we offer the Services … are eligible to subscribe.”
On-demand subscribers “are able to stream anywhere in the U.S. — including Puerto Rico and U.S. military bases.” Live TV subscribers are “not able to stream in U.S. territories, on U.S. military bases, or internationally.”
The service is “only available in the United States and certain of its territories,” subscribers “may not access the Services from locations where we do not have rights,” and they are asked not to use “any technology or technique to obscure or disguise your location.”
The honest reading for South Africa is short: nobody here can sign up, and an account opened in the States works under American rules. The disguise clause is quoted in full above because a residential U.S. IP changes the location Hulu reads. Better that you read that sentence here, next to what we sell, than meet it later.

Hulu’s live tier carries its strictest rule of all: Live TV subscribers are “not able to stream in U.S. territories, on U.S. military bases, or internationally.” For American sport, South African Disney+ now has something U.S. Hulu cannot offer from here.
Broadcast Media Africa reported that Disney+ Premium and Mobile subscribers in South Africa aged 18 or older get two ESPN Africa channels.
The launch report listed Australia’s National Rugby League, Aussie Rules, Japanese rugby featuring Springboks, European football, and the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL.
Hulu + Live TV stays inside the U.S. by Hulu’s own rule, and a residential address does not change a rule.
Which games reach the ESPN channels depends on ESPN Africa’s rights, fixture by fixture. Check the schedule for the match you want before assuming it is there — or that it is not.

Whatever the technology, a South African connection ends in a South African public address. The Internet Society’s 2026 estimate of the largest networks by market share is below; other networks make up the rest.
| Network, as the Internet Society names it | Estimated market share, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Telkom | About 16% |
| Vodacom | About 15% |
| MTN | About 11% |
| Dimension Data | About 9% |
| Rain | About 8% |
IPv6, the newer address system, is rare here. The Internet Society’s 2026 report finds that about 3% of South African users can reach websites over IPv6, below the African average of 7%. That is the reverse of Saudi Arabia, where the same organisation puts IPv6 at 65% and it has to be checked on every test. In South Africa, once a checker shows a U.S. IPv4 address, the IPv6 line is usually empty — look at it once, then move on.
The type of address matters more than IPv6 here. Hulu’s help page lists addresses “block listed because of previous anonymous proxy use” among the causes of its location error, and a public address used by many customers at once carries all of their history.
The national picture is steady: the Internet Society scores South Africa at 62% for its capacity to withstand faults, and it recorded no internet shutdowns in the 12 months to its 2026 report. What decides a single test is your own line and the address at the end of it.

An address checker that says United States is necessary but not sufficient. Hulu’s help page names the addresses it distrusts — “a VPN or VPS” — so what kind of address you present matters as much as its country.
| Connection | What Hulu receives | Limitation | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your South African line | A Telkom, Vodacom, MTN, Rain or other local address | South Africa, whatever else you do | Disney+, DStv and the rest of the local shelf |
| Free VPN apps | A handful of server addresses shared by very many users | Crowded and frequently block-listed | Not a test worth reading |
| Commercial data-centre VPN | An address in a hosting company’s range | Exactly the “a VPN or VPS” category Hulu names | Privacy on public Wi-Fi |
| USip residential U.S. IP | An everyday consumer address on a U.S. internet provider | Changes the network layer only | A consistent U.S. household to test against |
Once a plain episode from your own plan plays in a private window, the network side is finished.
An account, plan or licence problem is not fixed by switching addresses. If the plain-episode test passes, stop changing the network.

The steps run from the cheapest check to the most specific. Done in order, a failure tells you which layer failed — the local shelf, the account, the address or the licence.
Two minutes in the South African Disney+ app can save the whole evening: search the exact title in the Hulu tile. If it is there, stop — that is the legal, local answer. Test U.S. Hulu only for what the tile does not carry, on an account whose plan includes it.
Use a laptop browser, not the decoder, the television or a phone. Set it up with the Windows guide or the Mac guide; the Android and iOS apps come after a clean pass, and the lounge TV after that.
With the connection up, a checker should report the United States. IPv6 reaches only about 3% of South African users, so the IPv4 line is normally the one to read — glance at the IPv6 line anyway. Then open hulu.com in a private window, so no earlier South African visit is remembered.
Play a standard episode from your plan for a full minute. If it fails, keep the wording: P-EDU101 is Hulu’s error for an address it treats as a proxy; a message about your account’s region points at the Apple or Google store; a title that never appears in search is a licence question, not a network one.
If an ordinary episode plays and one title does not, the address is working and the answer is the plan or the licence. A new address will not change a licence.

Each device brings its own complications, and none of them changes what Hulu checks. The Hulu tile is already in the South African Disney+ app, and DStv offered Disney+ on the Explora Ultra from launch; U.S. Hulu is a separate service, so start with a laptop browser. The four videos were recorded in December 2022: the connection steps still apply, though Hulu’s own screens have changed since.

Windows has no store country to trip over, so it gives the cleanest reading. Import the USip OpenVPN profile, connect, and confirm the checker says United States. With IPv6 at about 3% of South African users, the IPv4 line is normally the whole story — glance at the IPv6 line once all the same. Open hulu.com in a private window: Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome or Edge, Ctrl+Shift+P in Firefox.
Step by step: the Windows setup guide.

If your Mac shows iCloud Private Relay, turn it off for the test — it routes Safari’s traffic its own way. Because IPv6 is uncommon on South African lines, a disagreement between Safari and Chrome usually points at stored hulu.com cookies rather than an address leak. Clear them, re-check the address, and try once more.
Step by step: the Mac setup guide.

A South African Google Play account offers Disney+, whose Premium and Mobile plans gained two ESPN channels in October 2025, but not the U.S. Hulu app. Changing the Play country has consequences for existing purchases and subscriptions, so decide it on its own. Exempt the connection app from battery optimisation, or the phone may close it mid-episode.
Step by step: the Android setup guide.

Apple lists apps by Apple Account country. A South African account shows Disney+ and its regional Hulu tile, not U.S. Hulu. Moving the account to another country affects subscriptions and Family Sharing under Apple’s own conditions — a decision, not a test step. Confirm the address in Safari first, and keep Location Services off for Hulu during the first run.
Step by step: the iOS setup guide.
A smart TV, streaming stick or games console cannot run the OpenVPN Connect app, so on those devices USip works through its Smart DNS: you register your home’s public IP address with USip, then enter the DNS addresses on the device or once on the router. Leave it until a laptop has passed. A DStv decoder is a separate matter: the Disney+ app on it is the South African service, with its regional catalogue.

One residential U.S. IP — a consumer address on a U.S. ISP, not the “VPN or VPS” ranges Hulu’s help page names. USip and Hulu are separate services: the plans include the connection only — not a Hulu subscription, account, app-store region, home network or rights to a title.
Separate services: these prices are for the USip VPN Residential U.S. IP service only. A Hulu subscription, a Hulu account and access to any particular title are not included.
These belong to Hulu, not to the network, and each can stop you before the address matters.
For new U.S. sign-ups since 23 September 2026, Hulu With Ads is $12.49 a month and Hulu Premium $21.49; the annual Hulu With Ads plan is $124.99. Existing subscribers move to the new prices on or after 21 October 2026.
Hulu With Ads and Hulu Premium come without a free trial. Hulu offers trials only on its Live TV bundle, to people who have not had Hulu in the past twelve months — and Live TV is the plan Hulu will not stream abroad.
Add-ons — Sports, Entertainment, Español, Unlimited Screens — sit on top of the base plans. A title outside your plan and a title refused by location look identical until you check the title against the account.
The Hulu app is offered by Apple Account and Google Play country, not by address. Changing either touches existing subscriptions and purchases, and it lasts long after this experiment. Test in a browser first.
USip provides the residential U.S. IP connection — not an account, a plan or the rights to any title. Hulu can block any address, and says so on its own pages.

South Africa keeps South African Standard Time, two hours ahead of UTC, and the IANA time-zone database shows it last used daylight saving in 1942–44. New York moves its clocks and Johannesburg does not, so the gap is six hours while the U.S. is on summer time and seven in the American winter.
8 p.m. in New York is 2 a.m. in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban in the American summer and 3 a.m. in the American winter. On-demand episodes are the realistic way to watch.
South Africa’s clocks do not change, so the gap shifts by an hour on the two weekends a year when America changes its own. If a time matters, check it again after an American clock change.
Bring the connection up and check the address before hulu.com or the app opens. A first contact from the South African address can leave a location decision in a cookie that confuses the next try.
Hulu’s guidance is about 3 Mbps on demand, 8 for live and 16 for 4K. Test towards the United States with the connection up; a local speed test flatters the line.
Changing U.S. locations halfway through an evening makes the account look like it is moving. Pick one connection and keep it until you finish.
If the router restarts — after a power interruption or an update — the line can come back on a different public address. Re-check before opening Hulu, not after it refuses — and if a TV uses USip’s Smart DNS, register the new address with USip.
None of these makes Hulu certain — Hulu decides. They make each attempt readable, so that a failure has one explanation instead of five.

Answered from Hulu’s, Disney’s and DStv’s own pages, South African reporting and the Internet Society’s measurements. Some of the honest answers are “check the local app first”, and we say so.
Not as its own service. Hulu’s help centre puts it in one line: “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.” South Africans reach Hulu-branded shows another way — since 8 October 2025, the Disney+ tile that used to be called Star has been called Hulu.
No. MyBroadband reported that after the rename the content would “remain the same as what’s available under the current Star brand” — a South African catalogue under a new name. U.S. Hulu’s library is licensed for the United States and sold only there.
Only if the plan covers the title and Hulu reads the connection as a U.S. household. A residential U.S. IP deals with the second part. It adds no plan and no title, and Hulu can still refuse any address.
Because your public address is South African. The Internet Society’s 2026 estimate puts Telkom, Vodacom and MTN among the largest networks by market share, and like every local network they hand out South African addresses. Hulu reads the address first.
Showmax closed on 30 April 2026. DStv says a selection of Showmax Originals moved to a dedicated Showmax section in the DStv Stream app, for DStv Compact and Premium customers. Swisher Post reported that the Hollywood catalogue was not confirmed to move with them.
Possibly — check before anything American. On 2 October 2025 Disney+ added two ESPN Africa channels for Premium and Mobile subscribers aged 18 or older in South Africa, and the launch report listed the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL among their sports. Check the current schedule for the game you want.
No. Hulu says Live TV subscribers are “not able to stream in U.S. territories, on U.S. military bases, or internationally.” That rule belongs to the plan, so no connection changes it. For live sport, look at the ESPN channels on South African Disney+ instead.
Not as far as we know. Disney+ was made available on the Explora Ultra at its South African launch on 18 May 2022, and that is the South African Disney+ service, with its regional catalogue. U.S. Hulu is a different service, reached through a different account.
Usually cookies or the address type. A hulu.com cookie can remember an earlier South African visit, and Hulu’s help page names “a VPN or VPS” and addresses “block listed because of previous anonymous proxy use” among its causes. IPv6 is less often to blame here — about 3% of South African users have it — but read that line too.
Two or three in the morning. South Africa keeps SAST, two hours ahead of UTC all year, so 8 p.m. in New York is 2 a.m. in Johannesburg during the American summer and 3 a.m. in the American winter.
This is not legal advice. We know of no South African rule against VPN software, and the Internet Society recorded no internet shutdowns in South Africa in the 12 months to its 2026 report. Check locally if it matters to you. Hulu’s terms apply either way: they ask subscribers not to use “any technology or technique to obscure or disguise your location.”
No. USip is the residential U.S. IP connection only. Hulu’s accounts, plans and title rights are Hulu’s, and Hulu sells them separately.
No shutdown has been announced. Disney told Variety in 2026 it had no current plan to phase out the Hulu app, and U.S. Hulu’s prices rose on 23 September 2026 — hard to square with reports of a closure, which remain unconfirmed.

The hub carries Hulu’s full rules, the Disney+ change and every error code. Of the guides below, Kenya and Nigeria are the nearest sub-Saharan ones — and a useful contrast, since neither was part of Disney+’s 2022 African launch.
Every other country — 53 guides across Europe, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa — is listed on the Hulu hub.
Every quotation and figure on this page comes from one of these. Hulu’s, Disney’s and DStv’s offers are theirs to change, and several of the 2026 changes are recent; the network figures are the Internet Society’s.
Search Disney+ — the Hulu tile and, for sport, the ESPN channels — and DStv Stream before anything else. If the title is there, you are done. If it is not, one test answers the rest: connection up, address confirmed, a private window on a laptop, one ordinary episode from your own plan, one full minute.
A pass settles the location side, and whatever is still wrong sits with the account, the plan or the licence. A fail with the exact message written down is the next most useful result — it tells you which one.
USip supplies the residential U.S. IP connection only. Hulu accounts, plans and content rights are Hulu’s, and Hulu can block any address.
