Short answer: Hulu is sold in the United States and nowhere else, and Disney+ — which carries the international tile Disney renamed from Star to Hulu on 8 October 2025 — has never launched in Kenya. Hulu’s help pages say “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.” and that a subscription “is intended for use by members of a single U.S. household.”
From Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret or anywhere else, the reason is the same and it is not personal: Hulu reads the public IP address your request arrives from, and every consumer connection in Kenya supplies a Kenyan one — Safaricom Home, Zuku, Faiba, Poa, Airtel, even Starlink, which is a special case for a different reason.
A residential U.S. IP changes the address Hulu reads. It does not change the account, the payment method or the licence, and this page is careful about that distinction throughout. What follows is what Kenyan connections look like from the outside, a ten-minute test you can interpret, and a straight answer on M-Pesa.
The word “Hulu” covers more than one thing in 2026, and the difference decides whether any of this applies to you.
Hulu’s standalone service covers the United States and certain of its territories. Sign-up requires you “To be located within the U.S.” and “a U.S.-issued form of payment.” On-demand subscribers “are able to stream anywhere in the U.S. — including Puerto Rico and U.S. military bases.” Live TV subscribers are “not able to stream in U.S. territories, on U.S. military bases, or internationally.”
On 8 October 2025 Disney renamed the Star tile inside Disney+ to Hulu across its international markets. It comes with the Disney+ subscription and carries what Disney licenses locally. Most U.S. Hulu content is licensed for the United States only, so the tile is not the U.S. library — the name travelled, the catalogue largely did not.
Hulu’s Subscriber Agreement is worth reading directly. It states that “Only residents of the countries and territories where we offer the Services … are eligible to subscribe,” that the service is “only available in the United States and certain of its territories,” and that you “may not access the Services from locations where we do not have rights.” It also asks you not to use “any technology or technique to obscure or disguise your location.” Better to know that before you spend anything than after.

Hulu reads the public IP address the request arrives from. Every consumer connection in Kenya supplies a Kenyan one, so the result is the same in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Thika, Nyeri, Machakos or Malindi. What differs between them is which providers you can choose from, not what Hulu concludes.

One structural note that shapes everything below. Fibre in Kenya is a city product: Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Nakuru are the four cities every major fibre operator serves, and beyond them the choice narrows quickly to Safaricom plus regional players, then to fixed wireless, then to satellite. None of that changes the country the address reports.

Getting the country to read United States is the easy half. Hulu’s help page also names the kind of address it distrusts — “a VPN or VPS” — and lists an address “block listed because of previous anonymous proxy use.” Those two lines are why cheap endpoints fail.

The consequence for Hulu is specific rather than general. Hulu lists an address “block listed because of previous anonymous proxy use” among the causes of its location error. An address shared with hundreds of other subscribers inherits whatever any of them did on it. That is a reputation problem stacked on top of a country problem — and it is the real argument for an ordinary residential address used by one household.

Starlink is the fastest-growing licensed ISP in Kenya and the question comes up constantly: if the satellite is not Kenyan, is the address? The honest answer is that it might not be — and that this is a problem rather than a feature.

An unpredictable address is worse than a predictable one for this purpose. The entire value of the ten-minute test below is that you know what you presented to Hulu; if the apparent country changes between attempts, a pass and a fail tell you nothing you can build on.
One clean result you can interpret is worth more than five ambiguous ones. The point of the order below is that when something fails you know which layer failed — network, browser, account or rights.
Which plan — Hulu With Ads, Hulu Premium, a Disney+ bundle, or Hulu + Live TV — how it is billed, and whether a home network was ever set on it. Hulu requires “a U.S.-issued form of payment” at sign-up. A residential address cannot manufacture an entitlement, and starting anywhere else wastes the evening.

Google Play serves apps by account country, so a Kenyan Google account will not list the Hulu app whatever the network is doing. That is a store-region decision with consequences for existing purchases and subscriptions — make it deliberately, not halfway through a test. Also exempt the VPN client from battery optimisation, because a tunnel dropped by Android’s power manager mid-episode looks precisely like a Hulu block.

Apple serves the app by Apple Account country rather than by IP, so a Kenyan account will not show it. Changing that country affects subscriptions, store credit, rentals and family sharing, and Apple’s own prerequisites apply — never with false details. If DStv Stream, Netflix, Prime Video or Viusasa carries what you were looking for, stop here — that is a better outcome than anything further down this page. With a U.S. residential address in front of it, Hulu behaves like any other streaming service, and what is left is bandwidth, cached data and the app itself.
Bring the connection up and confirm United States before the page or app opens. Connecting afterwards means the request Hulu judged arrived from Kenya, and that decision then sits in a cookie confusing every subsequent attempt.
Hulu asks for roughly 3 Mbps on demand, 8 Mbps for Live TV and 16 Mbps for 4K. Run the test with the connection up: the useful number is throughput to the United States, not to a Nairobi peering point, and on Kenyan fibre those two can differ considerably.
A stale location decision survives in the cookie and will produce the same answer no matter what you fix. Clear hulu.com data or use a private window before treating a second attempt as evidence.
If playback stalls after a reconnect, quit and reopen the tab or app so it re-resolves. Then stop — changing the server, the device and the browser together guarantees you learn nothing.
None of this makes Hulu certain, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. What it does is make the outcome legible, so a failure points you at the network, the browser, the account or the licence instead of at all four.

So the accurate position is this: a residential U.S. IP addresses the location requirement and nothing else. If you already hold a U.S. Hulu account — because you lived there, or a family member does — the location layer is the only one left, and that is the situation this page serves best. Hulu can keep selected titles on a phone or tablet. Two gates decide whether that is available to you, and neither is a network question.
Downloads exist only in the Hulu mobile and tablet apps on a current version — not in a desktop browser, not on a TV.
Offline downloads are a Hulu Premium (No Ads) feature. On an ad-supported plan the control is absent entirely, and no connection restores it.
Downloadability differs title by title according to the rights. Check for the download icon on the title’s page rather than assuming the catalogue behaves uniformly.

Because it is Kenyan, and because the address is shared. Kenya holds roughly 6.25 million public IPv4 addresses for a population near 56 million — about one per nine people, against roughly 4.7 per person in the United States. Safaricom announces about 1.9 million addresses across its networks while serving some 58 million subscriptions. Even if every one of those addresses went to consumers, most subscribers would still have to share.

The country can read United States and the address type still be wrong.
It does not. Around 13% of Kenyan users are IPv6-capable, which is roughly double the African average but well below the global one, so most traffic still needs IPv4 — and Kenya’s IPv4 pool is one address per nine people. Where IPv6 is used, the address is unambiguously Kenyan with no NAT involved at all, which if anything makes the location clearer, not murkier.
Disney has said it will fold Hulu into a unified Disney+ app during 2026, and the Hulu app on Nintendo Switch ended on 5 February 2026. Disney has separately said it has no current plans to sunset the standalone app on the main platforms, no shutdown date has been announced, and standalone subscriptions are still sold. Sources disagree, so we are not going to pretend the question is settled.
