Hulu in Italy: the U.S. Service and the Local Hub

Short answer: two things carry the Hulu name in Italy and only one of them is American. The local one is a hub inside Disney+, renamed from Star on 8 October 2025, licensed for Italy. Hulu’s own help pages say a subscription “is intended for use by members of a single U.S. household,” that “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.,” and that Hulu “doesn’t work with anonymizers or proxy services.”

Italy got Disney+ in the first European wave and has had the Star hub since 2021, so nothing about the catalogue changed in October 2025 except the word above it.

From Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin, Florence or Bologna, hulu.com does not load Hulu at all: every hulu.com address hands you to Disney+, and the Hulu app answers with its own location error — P-EDU101, “You appear to be using an anonymous proxy tool.” A residential U.S. IP presents the U.S. location Hulu’s rules are written for — for a U.S. subscriber travelling in Italy, or anyone whose U.S. plan already includes what they want to watch.

That is the whole of what it does. No Hulu subscription is included, no U.S. card is issued, no account is opened, no billing country changes and no Live TV home network is set. Hulu’s rules still apply in full: it says it “cannot support the use of VPNs or proxies,” and it can block-list any address it decides is one.

Start with what is actually sold in Italy

Is Hulu available in Italy?

Two different things carry the Hulu name in Italy, and only one of them is the service this page is about. U.S. Hulu — hulu.com, the Hulu app, Hulu + Live TV — is sold in the United States only. Hulu’s help centre says a subscription “is intended for use by members of a single U.S. household,” that you “will need a U.S.-issued form of payment when you sign up,” and that “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.” The sign-up requirements begin with “To be located within the U.S.”

Hulu inside Disney+ in Italy is something else. Disney+ launched in Italy on 24 March 2020. Star arrived as a hub inside Disney+ in Italy in February 2021; on 8 October 2025 Disney renamed that hub Hulu. Disney calls Hulu its “global General Entertainment brand on Disney+”; the hub carries the general-entertainment titles Disney licenses for Italy — some of them Hulu originals — under a Disney+ subscription. It is not the U.S. Hulu library, it has no Hulu app of its own in Italy, and it has no Hulu + Live TV.

From Italy the behaviour is consistent. hulu.com never renders a Hulu page — every address is handed to Disney+ — and the app returns P-EDU101, “You appear to be using an anonymous proxy tool.” The address is the first thing checked and not the last: browser location permission, phone GPS, old cookies, the app-store country and the account’s ZIP code all feed the same decision, and Live TV adds the registered home network on top. The test further down separates them.

Hulu has no travel mode. HBO Max lets a U.S. account travel to the countries where it is sold; Hulu’s help centre lists “You are accessing Hulu from outside the United States” as the first cause of its proxy error.

One word, two catalogues

The Hulu hub in Italy and the Hulu tile in U.S. Disney+ — not the same thing

Two Disney+ apps now show a Hulu name: the one in Italy and the one in the United States. What sits behind the name is different in each, and no connection converts one into the other.

Disney+ in Italy: the Hulu hub

The former Star hub, renamed

Disney+ launched in Italy on 24 March 2020. Star arrived as a hub inside Disney+ in Italy in February 2021; on 8 October 2025 Disney renamed that hub Hulu. Disney’s release calls Hulu “the global General Entertainment brand on Disney+”; the hub holds the general-entertainment titles Disney licenses for Italy — the same catalogue the Star hub held the day before. Some Hulu originals are in it, under the rights Disney holds for Italy; the U.S. Hulu library as a whole is not, because Hulu’s rights are U.S.-only whichever app serves them.

The other Hulu tile — the American one

In the United States, Disney+ shows a Hulu tile that is the U.S. Hulu library. Hulu’s condition is narrow: it is for “Eligible subscribers with a Hulu or Hulu Premium plan, bundle plan, or Hulu + Live TV plan (billed directly by Hulu).” The app is not going anywhere either — Disney says there are “no current plans to sunset the Hulu app.”

Where the connection fits in all this

One check, out of several

The address is what hulu.com, the Hulu app and the U.S. Hulu tile read before anything else. It is not what decides which Disney+ catalogue you see: that follows the account’s own country and billing, which belong to Disney. A disney+ subscription in italy stays exactly what it was.

EU portability is about Disney+, not Hulu. The EU’s portability rules let a subscription bought in one member state be used temporarily in another — they cover Disney+ in Italy. They say nothing about U.S. Hulu, which is not sold in the EU at all.

The practical rule. Prove the Hulu app or hulu.com in a private desktop browser first. Then, if your U.S. plan is billed by Hulu, sign in to Disney+ with the same MyDisney email and open the Hulu tile — a second door to the same U.S.-only library, under the same location check.

How to test Hulu from Italy, step by step

The goal is one clean result you can interpret, so that if something fails you know which layer failed — the network, the browser, the account or the rights.

Confirm what your account is entitled to

Before touching the network: which plan (Hulu With Ads, Hulu Premium, a Disney+ bundle, or Hulu + Live TV), how it is billed (Hulu direct, Disney-billed, or an app store) and — for Live TV — whether the home network is set. Hulu requires “a U.S.-issued form of payment.” A residential IP cannot fix an entitlement you don’t have.

Bring the connection up first, then Hulu

The order is the whole trick. Connect, check on a third-party site that your public address reads United States, and only then load anything belonging to Hulu. Hulu can re-check after sign-in, so the address has to hold for the whole session — and if your ISP in Italy hands out IPv6, disable it for the test so nothing leaks around the route.

Use a clean browser session

A private window, on a computer, with no old Hulu cookies — and none from Disney+ in Italy or a local streaming app either, which carry a non-U.S. location. One Hulu-specific caveat: Hulu’s help page lists private/incognito mode among the things its system can mistake for an anonymous proxy — if a private window answers P-EDU101, repeat once in a normal window after clearing hulu.com cookies and revoking Hulu’s browser location permission.

Pick an ordinary on-demand episode your plan definitely covers and let it run for a minute. That single result validates the connection, the browser and the account path together. Save the Disney+ tile, Live TV and the television app for afterwards — each of those can fail for reasons that have nothing to do with your address.

Write down the exact wording

If something fails, the message is the diagnosis: “P-EDU101,” “Error 16,” a Disney+ page, or a plain playback failure. Each points at a different layer, and each has a different fix in the list further down. “It didn’t work” cannot be diagnosed.

If the plain title plays and the special thing doesn’t, the answer is in the account or the rights — plan, billing route, home network, licence — not in the connection. Changing servers will not change a licence.

Devices differ in what they hide, not in what Hulu checks. The order below is cheapest-to-diagnose first, which from Italy means a desktop browser and nothing else until it works.

Hulu’s 2026 prices and the payment rule that blocks most people from Italy

Two separate facts: what Hulu charges, and what Hulu will take. The first is arithmetic; the second is a rule, and the rule is the harder of the two in Italy.

Can I watch Hulu in Italy?

Only from a U.S. location, with a U.S. Hulu account whose plan includes what you want to watch. U.S. Hulu is not sold in Italy; Hulu’s help pages say “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.” and that a subscription “is intended for use by members of a single U.S. household.” A residential U.S. IP presents that location; it is not a subscription, and Hulu can decline any address.

Can I subscribe to Hulu in Italy?

No — there is nothing to subscribe to. Hulu sells in the United States only. What exists in Italy is the Hulu-branded hub inside Disney+, which was called Star until 8 October 2025 and holds titles licensed for this market. It comes with a Disney+ subscription and it is not a Hulu login.

Does USip include a Hulu subscription?

No. USip and Hulu are separate services. USip supplies the residential U.S. IP connection; a Hulu account, plan, U.S.-issued payment method and content rights are Hulu’s. It does not sell gift cards, open accounts or change a billing country either.

It still says I am in Italy. Now what?

Treat it as information rather than a fault. Disconnect, reconnect, confirm the public address on a third-party checker, clear hulu.com cookies and try once in a fresh private window. If it still refuses with a residential U.S. address up, the answer is probably not the network — check the plan, the billing route and the store region before changing anything else.

Is any of this against the rules?

Two different questions. VPN software itself is legal in Italy. Hulu’s terms are separate and they are the ones that apply to you: Hulu says it “cannot support the use of VPNs or proxies,” that “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.,” and that it can block-list addresses. Read that clause and decide for yourself — we are not going to tell you it does not exist.

Will it be fast enough?

There is no intentional cap on our side; the limit is your own line and the distance to the United States. Compare a speed test with and without the connection. An ordinary on-demand episode asks for a fraction of what a live 4K stream does.

How much is Hulu in 2026?

I already pay for Hulu. Why did it stop working here?

Because Hulu checks the request, not the history of the account. Its help centre lists “You are accessing Hulu from outside the United States” as the first cause of the anonymous-proxy error, and says subscribers “are able to stream anywhere in the U.S. — including Puerto Rico and U.S. military bases.” Live TV is stricter again: “not able to stream in U.S. territories, on U.S. military bases, or internationally.”

No. Disney renamed its Star hub to Hulu on 8 October 2025. The catalogue underneath is the one Star already held, licensed locally — not the U.S. Hulu library.
