How to Reach U.S. Hulu from Portugal

Short answer: U.S. Hulu is not sold in Portugal. The “Hulu” you can see in Portugal is a hub inside Disney+ — Disney’s general-entertainment brand, which replaced Star on 8 October 2025 — with content licensed for Portugal, not the U.S. library. Hulu’s own help pages say a subscription “is intended for use by members of a single U.S. household,” that “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.,” and that Hulu “doesn’t work with anonymizers or proxy services.”

Portugal has a large returning-emigrant population, and a U.S. Hulu account that follows somebody home is the most common version of this question here.

Open hulu.com from Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Coimbra or Faro and you never reach a Hulu page: every address redirects to Disney+. The app is blunter — P-EDU101, “You appear to be using an anonymous proxy tool.” Both are the same verdict about where the request came from, and a residential U.S. IP is the part of that verdict a connection can change.

Everything else stays exactly where it was: the plan, the card, the app-store country, the profiles, the home network. We are not going to imply otherwise — Hulu itself says it “cannot support the use of VPNs or proxies,” and that clause is worth reading before you spend anything.

What actually carries the Hulu name in Portugal

Everything on this page rests on one distinction. U.S. Hulu is the American subscription — hulu.com, the Hulu app, Hulu + Live TV — and Hulu’s own help centre is unambiguous about where it is sold: a subscription “is intended for use by members of a single U.S. household,” you “will need a U.S.-issued form of payment when you sign up,” and “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.” The first sign-up requirement is “To be located within the U.S.”

Hulu inside Disney+ in Portugal is something else. Disney+ launched in Portugal on 15 September 2020. Star arrived as a hub inside Disney+ in Portugal in February 2021; on 8 October 2025 Disney renamed that hub Hulu. Disney calls Hulu its “global General Entertainment brand on Disney+”; the hub carries the general-entertainment titles Disney licenses for Portugal — some of them Hulu originals — under a Disney+ subscription. It is not the U.S. Hulu library, it has no Hulu app of its own in Portugal, and it has no Hulu + Live TV.

From Portugal, expect two behaviours and no Hulu page. The website redirects to Disney+ on every address; the app returns the anonymous-proxy error, P-EDU101. Location is decided from more than the IP — browser permission, GPS, cached cookies, app-store country, the ZIP on the account, and for Live TV the home network — which is why a single change rarely settles it and why the test below goes one layer at a time.

Hulu has no travel mode. HBO Max lets a U.S. account travel to the countries where it is sold; Hulu’s help centre lists “You are accessing Hulu from outside the United States” as the first cause of its proxy error.

One word, two catalogues

The Hulu hub in Portugal and the Hulu tile in U.S. Disney+ — not the same thing

Two Disney+ apps now show a Hulu name: the one in Portugal and the one in the United States. What sits behind the name is different in each, and no connection converts one into the other.

Disney+ in Portugal: the Hulu hub

The former Star hub, renamed

Disney+ launched in Portugal on 15 September 2020. Star arrived as a hub inside Disney+ in Portugal in February 2021; on 8 October 2025 Disney renamed that hub Hulu. Disney’s release calls Hulu “the global General Entertainment brand on Disney+”; the hub holds the general-entertainment titles Disney licenses for Portugal — the same catalogue the Star hub held the day before. Some Hulu originals are in it, under the rights Disney holds for Portugal; the U.S. Hulu library as a whole is not, because Hulu’s rights are U.S.-only whichever app serves them.

The other Hulu tile — the American one

In the United States, Disney+ shows a Hulu tile that is the U.S. Hulu library. Hulu’s condition is narrow: it is for “Eligible subscribers with a Hulu or Hulu Premium plan, bundle plan, or Hulu + Live TV plan (billed directly by Hulu).” The app is not going anywhere either — Disney says there are “no current plans to sunset the Hulu app.”

Where the connection fits in all this

One check, out of several

The address is what hulu.com, the Hulu app and the U.S. Hulu tile read before anything else. It is not what decides which Disney+ catalogue you see: that follows the account’s own country and billing, which belong to Disney. A disney+ subscription in portugal stays exactly what it was.

EU portability is about Disney+, not Hulu. The EU’s portability rules let a subscription bought in one member state be used temporarily in another — they cover Disney+ in Portugal. They say nothing about U.S. Hulu, which is not sold in the EU at all.

The practical rule. Prove the Hulu app or hulu.com in a private desktop browser first. Then, if your U.S. plan is billed by Hulu, sign in to Disney+ with the same MyDisney email and open the Hulu tile — a second door to the same U.S.-only library, under the same location check.

Bring the connection up first, then Hulu

The order is the whole trick. Connect, check on a third-party site that your public address reads United States, and only then load anything belonging to Hulu. Hulu can re-check after sign-in, so the address has to hold for the whole session — and if your ISP in Portugal hands out IPv6, disable it for the test so nothing leaks around the route.

Confirm what your account is entitled to

Before touching the network: which plan (Hulu With Ads, Hulu Premium, a Disney+ bundle, or Hulu + Live TV), how it is billed (Hulu direct, Disney-billed, or an app store) and — for Live TV — whether the home network is set. Hulu requires “a U.S.-issued form of payment.” A residential IP cannot fix an entitlement you don’t have.

A private window, on a computer, with no old Hulu cookies — and none from Disney+ in Portugal or a local streaming app either, which carry a non-U.S. location. One Hulu-specific caveat: Hulu’s help page lists private/incognito mode among the things its system can mistake for an anonymous proxy — if a private window answers P-EDU101, repeat once in a normal window after clearing hulu.com cookies and revoking Hulu’s browser location permission.

Devices differ in what they hide, not in what Hulu checks. The order below is cheapest-to-diagnose first, which from Portugal means a desktop browser and nothing else until it works.

For anything that cannot run the client — a Smart TV, an Apple TV, a Fire TV stick, a Roku — put the connection on the router instead. Is watching Hulu possible in Portugal?

Yes, but only with two things you have to bring yourself: a U.S. Hulu account whose plan covers the title, and a connection Hulu reads as being in the United States. Hulu is explicit that “The videos on Hulu are only available in the U.S.” and that a subscription is “intended for use by members of a single U.S. household.” A residential U.S. IP answers the second requirement and none of the first.

Can I subscribe to Hulu in Portugal?

No — there is nothing to subscribe to. Hulu sells in the United States only. What exists in Portugal is the Hulu-branded hub inside Disney+, which was called Star until 8 October 2025 and holds titles licensed for this market. It comes with a Disney+ subscription and it is not a Hulu login.

Am I buying Hulu here?

No. This is a connection, billed separately from anything Hulu charges. You still need your own Hulu account, your own U.S.-issued payment method and whatever plan covers the title. USip does not open accounts, sell gift cards, issue cards or change a billing country.

How do I pay for Hulu from Portugal?

It is Hulu’s location error: “Error playing this video. You appear to be using an anonymous proxy tool” (codes P-EDU101 and BYA-403-011; on iPhone and iPad, Error 16 or “Your account is not valid in this region”). Hulu’s own causes: accessing Hulu from outside the United States, a VPN or VPS, an unsupported third-party app, a browser in private mode, or an IP address “block listed because of previous anonymous proxy use.”

Can my local Disney+ subscription become a Hulu one?

No. A Disney+ login shows the catalogue for the country the account belongs to, wherever you connect from, and the Hulu hub inside it comes with that catalogue. The U.S. Hulu library needs a U.S. Hulu plan; the Hulu tile inside U.S. Disney+ needs a U.S. plan “billed directly by Hulu.”

Can hotel or office Wi-Fi in Portugal block this?

Yes. Some hotels, offices, universities and public hotspots restrict VPN protocols or throttle video. If the test fails there, repeat it on home broadband from MEO, NOS, Vodafone and Digi or on a mobile hotspot before you draw a conclusion — and switch off IPv6 on the home line for the test, so that no request leaves outside the U.S. route.

Does the Hulu hub in my Disney+ have the U.S. shows?

Some of them, by coincidence of licensing, and not most. Disney made Hulu its “global General Entertainment brand on Disney+” on 8 October 2025 and renamed the Star hub. What sits under the name is what Disney licenses locally; U.S. Hulu’s catalogue was bought under U.S. contracts and does not travel with the word.

What if Hulu still thinks I am in Portugal?

Close Hulu, open a private window, confirm the public IP reads United States, and try again. If hulu.com still hands you to Disney+ or the app still answers P-EDU101 with the residential IP connected, treat that as a real result: check the account, the app-store region and the plan before you touch the network again. Hulu can block-list any address it chooses.

Does my U.S. Hulu subscription work when I travel to Portugal?

Hulu says Hulu and Hulu Premium subscribers “are able to stream anywhere in the U.S. — including Puerto Rico and U.S. military bases,” and lists “You are accessing Hulu from outside the United States” as the first cause of its anonymous-proxy error. Live TV is stricter still: “not able to stream in U.S. territories, on U.S. military bases, or internationally.” A residential U.S. IP presents the U.S. location the account is written for — which is what Hulu’s rules ask you not to do with a VPN or proxy.

What does Hulu charge?

Hulu prices in U.S. dollars and changes them on its own schedule — the standard plans rose in October 2025 and the ESPN bundles on 20 August 2026. Rather than repeat a figure that goes stale, the current tables are kept on the hub and checked against Hulu’s plans page. One point worth knowing: there is no free trial on the standard plans.
