Short answer: Hulu Japan is a different company; U.S. Hulu is not sold in Japan. Start with a private desktop browser, connect before you open Hulu, and play one plain on-demand title. If that plays, move to a phone, a Smart TV, Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV or a router. Hulu Japan is run by HJ Holdings, owned by Nippon TV since 2014, with its own catalogue, prices and apps. A U.S. Hulu login does not work on it and a Hulu Japan login does not work on U.S. Hulu. Disney+ Japan is a third thing again — its Hulu hub holds Japanese-licensed titles, not the U.S. Hulu library.

Two Japanese specifics are worth knowing before you test. Several fibre and mobile plans put you behind CGNAT, so the address you see in a checker is shared with other subscribers — which is exactly the kind of address Hulu’s help page describes as liable to be “block listed because of previous anonymous proxy use.” And hotel, campus and coworking networks across Japan commonly block VPN protocols, so a failure there tells you about the network you are on, not about Hulu.

The country can be right and the address type still wrong. The goal is one clean result you can interpret, so that if something fails you know which layer failed — the network, the browser, the account or the rights. Set up the U.S. connection first, confirm it, and only then open Hulu.
Before touching the network: which plan (Hulu With Ads, Hulu Premium, a Disney+ bundle, or Hulu + Live TV), how it is billed (Hulu direct, Disney-billed, or an app store) and — for Live TV — whether the home network is set. Japan hosts more U.S. military installations than any country outside the United States — Yokota Air Base and Camp Zama, Yokosuka and Atsugi in Kanagawa, Misawa in Aomori, Iwakuni in Yamaguchi, Sasebo in Nagasaki, and Kadena, Camp Foster and Torii Station in Okinawa. Hulu lets you keep selected titles on a phone or tablet for offline viewing. It is gated on the plan and on the title, so it is worth checking both before you rely on it.
